Gratituesday: Quite a Scare

Saturday night my dad called and said these words:

“Kevin and Michele and the kids were at a basketball game tonight at the juco and Renee fell through the bleachers. They were sitting at the top. They’re on their way to the hospital right now. I’ll call you when I know more.”

Whew. I felt sick to my stomach with fear. (Kevin is my brother…Renee is their two year old.)   Matt, the boys and I prayed together then, and constantly over the next few hours.

Waiting for the next phone call was yucky (that’s the best word I can think of to describe it). I wanted the phone to ring so that I could hear how she was. I was afraid for the phone ring so that I could hear how she was. Yucky.

I told Matt that in a situation like this if you hear that she “broke her arm” it would actually be a relief.

We finally talked to my dad around 10:15 that night. Renee was okay. But she did fracture her skull. Her vitals looked good. There was no swelling on the brain. She was eating a popcycle. She was jabbering.

I’m pretty sure Renee’s  jabbering sounded like beautiful music to Kevin and Michele.  Just hearing the words, “She’s jabbering away” was enough to make me cry.

Here’s Renee in the hospital the morning after her fall.
I love how she’s smiling for the picture.

After a night in the ICU…she was allowed to go home. When I last talked to my brother, he said Renee is acting normal…running and playing. My question was, “Wow, does she not even have a headache? I’m pretty sure I’d have a headache.”

God is good. I’m SO GRATEFUL for His protection and that Renee is healthy and whole.

Oh, her guardian angel surely must have been on duty! I can’t imagine the feeling her parents had getting down the bleachers to get to her – you’d almost want to fall through yourself just to get there faster. Praise God that she’s OK!

We’ve been in a similar situation with our daughter and the only thing you can do is leave it at His feet. It is the hardest thing to do, but there is comfort in knowing He will take care of her. I’m sure they’re giving her all the extra hugs and kisses she can handle. Praise God is right!

Oh, the poor little sweetheart! My daughter fell out of bed during the night this week, and got a good shiner and bruised face as well, and it made me hurt inside every time I look at her. Renee’s looks even more painful, but what a trooper she is! Praise God for protecting her!

OMGoodness. I didn’t know this had happened!! And in a weird way (other than the fact i could have been praying), I’m glad I didn’t know until she was ok. Renee is TOUGH, I always knew that about her. =)

Pass our love on to Kev and Michelle!

WOW… she is a toughie, for sure! So glad she’s okay. My little guy was spinning today (he’s just learning to do that, and not well!) and fell right onto the edge of the wood on our stairs. His damage was nowhere near as bad as this, but it’s still painful to look at! OWIE! I hope she heals up super fast.

Knowing we would be doing the Gratituesday I pondered what I was thankful for this week. This past Sunday morning I stood and watched an elderly gentleman from our congregation go to each of my boys and shake their hand and then give them a blessing. This gentleman is very quiet so I stood absolutely amazed. I am so thankful that I am in a congregation where the people have reached out to our children and made them welcome. We have so many godly men in our congregation that our boys can look up to. My husband and I were brought to this congregation a little more than a year ago to minister and along with the rest of the congregation to reach out into the community and make a difference. It is a congregation that is very culturally diverse. We have 40% black, 50% white and 10% hispanic. What a rich culture my boys are exposed to. I will be forever greatful.

That reminds me of when The Girl, who was only a month old, was toppled off a table top while in her carseat by some inquisitive cousins. Though the tears did not come until after the hospital clinic, what relief I felt when I heard the doctor say, “Well, if ever there was a time to have a fractured skull, this is it. It’s really easy for them to recover from them as their skulls don’t really firm up until they start into their elder toddler years.”

It IS a blessing that it happened when it did, and if The Girl is any indication as to what they can expect, then I think they can relax a wee bit. The Girl is mighty good in every way with nary a worry in the head… well maybe a bit, but I think that’s just because she’s almost a teenager. :)

Oh Wow! I am late reading your Tuesday blog but it brought tears to my eyes!! I am happy to hear that she’s ok but I cannot imagine how scared they were. I work as an xray tech during the midnight shift so I see things like this a lot and I am always amazed at children and how they handle injuries (sometimes much better than adults!). I am sending my thoughts and prayers that she heals quickly.

Oh, what a sweet smile, SO glad to hear she is doing well. I’m sure those hours were grueling and miserable for your whole family.

We recently had some heart wrenching news as well, my stepson has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. We spent 2 weeks worrying, wondering if the cancer had spread. Luckily, we finally now know that it has not, and what a blessing it was to find the tumor that lead to the diagnosis early.

Sending prayers for a quick and complete recovery!
