I posted this about two years ago, but if you weren’t reading this blog back then, you would have missed out on all the fun. I can’t have you miss out on all the fun. And really, I just like knowing which of you has gas. Or electric. :)
———————————————————-
I giggle everytime I think about this, so I thought I’d really better share it with you.
When we first got married, we lived in an apartment in someone’s basement. It had a little kitchen with a tiny gas stove. I had never cooked on a gas stove before and I soon learned to really enjoy it. One day a friend of mine came over and walked into my kitchen. And she said,
“Oh!! Do you have gas?!”
I jumped a bit from the shock of her question because of course, I had no idea she was asking about my stove. I really thought that she was randomly asking me if I had gas.
You know…gas.
What in the world would make her ask such a thing? Had my stomach just gurgled? Had my shoe made an unbecoming sound on the floor?
Completely oblivious to my distress, my friend went on to talk about how she just loved it when she used to have gas, but she didn’t have gas anymore and oh how she missed it. How lucky of me to have gas. And, maybe someday, she too would have gas.
Uuuuhhhhhhmmmmmm.
I don’t know how long it took for me to understand that she was talking about the fact that her stove was electric and my stove was gas. Sometimes I’m not that bright. (Possibly an effect from having gas.)
She and I had a huge laugh over that one…and I seriously still giggle about it (16 years later) whenever I think about it.
So, I’ve just gotta ask.
Do you have gas? Or do you have electric?
I know some people LOVE their gas stoves and feel that they are must-haves in their homes. I currently have an electric ceramic top since that was in the house when we moved here. I don’t really have a preference. I could take gas or leave it. :)
How exciting for those of you who have gas. You get to leave a comment saying,
“Hello. My name is ___________. I have gas.”
Those of us with electric just won’t have as much fun with this one. Ah but some day. Someday, we too might have gas.
Simone says
hahahaha…..I have electric, although sometimes I wish I had gas! (Just cause I like the old fashioned look)
Farrah says
My name is Farrah and I have gas. The stove is gas and my dryer is electric.
Karen says
I have electric but wish I had gas, that way if the power is out I can still cook.
Carolyn says
I have gas and enjoy cooking with it but I miss having an electric oven. Guess that’s why the rich chef’s have one with both!
Amy says
Hi, My name is Amy and I have gas. Oh, but I also have an electric stove.
Ahhhh ha, ha, ha, ha. I could NOT resist!
Danielle B says
Hello, my name is Danielle, I have gas. That IS funny to say!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that I have gas! I’ve had both electric and gas, and gas seems to be the best, for cooking. Our whole home is nearly all gas.
Wendy says
I currently have electric. Is it true that you are not supposed to use electric stoves to preserve can goods? After I had preserved some apple butter this past year someone informed me that they learned in a canning class not to use an electric stove for canning…I was not sure if it was dangerous or just not the preferred method?
Frances says
:D That is so funny! Hubby think gas rocks but I’ve never cooked on it and it kind of scares me. My grandmother had a gas stove that she had to get down on the floor and light with a match. It always startled me when I heard it go “Pwwoof!” It’s especially impressive if the gas has been on a little too long!
Michelle says
Hello, my name is Michelle and I do NOT have gas, although my hubby really wishes I did! hee hee hee
Melanie says
I have a cooktop electric—-I think there are positives of both gas and electric—for cleaning I definitely prefer electric cook top because–well I’m a really messy cook! My mom has gas–and I like that when you turn the heat off the heat is actually gone and the pot doesn’t continue to boil over for the next 10 mins! But Not quite as easy to clean up my mess as just wiping it with a washcloth—funny post—–ahh the positives and negatives of having GASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Cindy says
We actually just build a new house so I thought I could have whatever I wanted–which is gas. However, we had geo-thermal heating installed which requires no gas. We also live in the country, so “gas” for us would be propane from a big ugly tank in the yard. We already had an electric dryer from our previous house, so the only things we would use gas for would be the stove and the water heater. My husband didn’t really want a tank in the yard for 2 appliances, so I had to get electric again. I got one of the flat top styles. I’ve heard I shouldn’t use it for canning. It’s fine, but I definately prefer gas!
Oly says
In a house with a husband and four boys, “I” have gas whether I have gas or a gas stove or not. I would definitely prefer the gas stove in this situation. I have a ceramic stove top. I definitely cannot can on it. I’ll stop now.
Tracy says
Hi I’m Tracy and I have gas. :) Yeah, that’s fun to say. Anyway, our house came with an electric stove, but gas was already run behind it. So one day, an element went out in the oven, and I declared the whole thing totaled, even though it probably could have been fixed cheaply and easily. Seemed like a good excuse to get a new gas one to me! We craigs-listed the old one for cheap, and got a new shiny gas one and I LOVE it.
Wendy says
I’m going to upset the apple cart because I have dual fuel my stove top is gas and my oven is electric.
Denise says
Me too, Wendy! It was my dream to have a dual fuel, and I’m so excited!!
Sonja says
I am a dual fuel girl also, love it!
Jenny says
I have gas now, but started with electric. In the big ice storm of 2007, I was without electricity for 9 days, so as soon as I could I put in a gas stove (propane, I’m in the country). At least now I can have coffee if the electricity goes out. Love cooking on a gas stove. It’s electronic ignition so if the electric does go out, have to use only the burners, they told me I couldn’t light the oven with a match.
Kristy says
This is so funny!!!
I grew up using an electric stove, so when my husband and I married and moved into an old house (with a really old gas stove) I had no idea how to use it. To my surprise, I LOVED it!!
We now live in a home that does not have gas. :) I honestly have to say that I miss my gas stove (especially in the winter since it helps keep the kitchen so nice and warm). Although my preference is gas, I kinda want one of those ceramic flat top stoves like you have… sounds SO much easier to keep clean!
Brenda says
I had gas, but don’t anymore, and really, really miss it. I hate that when pasta water starts boiling over I have to stand there holding the pot in the air waiting for my flat electric cooktop to cool down enough for me to put it back down and get on with the other things I was doing.
Sadly, my dishwasher just quit on me. If I was going to choose which appliance should have died first, I’d definitely have chosen ‘STOVE!’ so I would have had an excuse to get gas.
Bekki says
LOVE my gas stove! My neighbor has electric and we have timed how long it takes our canning pots to heat up and such. The gas cuts down on the time as it constantly keeps a boil and she has to wait for hers to pick back up again each time she puts her jars in.
Bethany B. says
I’m with Wendy…my stovetop is gas but my oven is electric. We bought this house that way. After I got over my fear of blowing up the house, my gas & I have gotten along quit well (hee hee) :)
Melinda says
Electric. I’m afraid of open flames so I am happy with that. Once when our electricity was off for a week during a snowstorm, we brought in a camp stove and cooked on it near a window that was opened just a tiny crack. We almost had a serious discussion about whether or not to open the window. I “won”. Did you know that cooking by candlelight makes it very difficult to see if the hamburger is still pink or not?
Sarah says
I have a gas stove and oven and love it. Thankfully it’s the self-lighting kind. I lived in Uzbekistan (over by Afghanistan) for a month right after college and had a gas stove that you had to light with a match. I was always too scared to light it and had to get my roommates to do it if I wanted to eat something warm. I ate a lot of naan and cereal that month. =)
Carol says
Hello, my name is Carol and I’ve had gas for 30 years and LOVE it!
Carol says
Actually, I have both. I have an electric oven and a gas cooktop.
IMHO, It is absolutely the best way to go.
Amanda says
I am SO HAPPY to say that I have gas! LOL We had a gas stove growing up and I loved it. When I moved away we would have nothing but electric for 11 years. I NEVER liked electric stoves one little bit! We just moved into this place in December and I was overjoyed to discover it had a GAS STOVE!! It is every bit as wonderful as I remembered! I don’t ever want to go back!
Sara B says
I have ceramic electric and I am glad. I don’t want to inhale all those gas fumes…
Rita says
I grew up with gas but now have electric. We live in the country and it would be quite an expense to put in propane. I’m actually fine with electric.
Kate M says
My name is Kate and YES, I’ve got gas! I grew up with electric and have had gas my entire adult life and I wouldn’t change it for ANYTHING! I tried cooking on electric and burned EVERYTHING!!
Katie says
I have gas!!! I really like the way it cooks but don’t really like the gas oven. I think that if my oven goes out (I think it is on it way) then I will probably be buying one that has a gas range an electric oven and a griddle insert for my husband!!!! I would like it too. We use a griddle all the time.
Meredith McG says
Hi my name is Meri and I’m content not having gas..but I’d sure love it !
I LOVE how easy it is to clean the glass stove top..but gas is easier to regulate and you can makes SMORES :D!!
Melodya says
I grew up w/ a gas but now have an electric.
I would love to have a gas stove but an electric oven.
Alyssa says
Hello. My name is Alyssa. I have gas…I have had it for 9 years and there’s no way I could go electric again…every time I try while visiting family, I burn everything…besides, down here, the gas is WAY cheaper! That’s a hoot to say!!
Lanna says
I have an electric oven/range. With a ceramic top. I’m supposedly not allowed to can on it, whoops. Waiting until I finally break that sucker canning before we get a lovely dual-fuel oven I’ve been drooling over for a while. Gas range (that I can fit my giant Amish water bath canner on!), electric oven. Oh baby.
Lisa says
Hi, I’m Lisa and I have gas. :) The only thing I really don’t like about my gas stove is that the knobs are on the front. I am 8 months pregnant and there have been several times when I leaned up against the stove and turned on the burner…with my belly! The other day, I went to run an errand and came back to the smell of gas in my house. I quickly realized what I had done and turned off the burner and opened up some windows. And then I realized that I had left a candle burning while I was gone! The Lord was really kind because that could have been really, really bad. So, in that case, I guess I would prefer electric!
Carmen says
I love my dual-fuel stove – gas stovetop, electric oven. Turn on the burner, and it’s instantly hot! Turn it off, and it’s OFF. I’ve heard gas ovens can be temperamental in the temperature department, so I’m glad mine’s electric.
When it comes to canning, though, we do that on the deck with a 3-burner 30,000 BTU per burner propane camp stove. SO much better than my puny 8,000 BTU burner kitchen stove! And it keeps the heat outside, too, which is no mean consideration in the middle of August.
Melinda says
That is so cool that you can outside. My grandmother had a large propane stove that she used to do the blanching outside, but she always put the canner inside on the electric stove. I never did figure that out. It wouldn’t have been any hotter sitting outside with the canner, even in August in Georgia, because she would hardly ever let my mother or aunt turn on the window unit a/c. I never did understand why she paid good money for that a/c.
Marianne says
I have a gas stove top and oven. I love it, my Dad and brother always tell me how lucky I am!!
Kia @ A View From Here says
Hi, my name’s Kia and I have gas!
I love my gas stove and when/if we move it’s coming with us.
We went without a stove for several weeks when we first moved in because I was determined to have gas and not electric. Here in the UK it’s quite normal to find a gas hob with an electric oven but pretty hard to find a fully gas stove for some reason.
Kate says
We have electric but I wish we had gas again. Our range burns everything and I can’t use my canner on it (I have to buy different one). I hate having electric everything. I guess to each their own.
Randi @ www.ExpressionsOfPerceptions.com says
Gas! I love it, electric doesn’t cook evenly and is unreliable if the power goes out. Not to mention, electric costs 3 times as much as gas here!
Leah says
I have electric now, but our RV (before we sold it) had gas and we absolutely loved it. I don’t know what it was, but the food seriously tasted better when it was cooked on gas!
RaShell S says
Hi, my name is RaShell and I wish I had gas! :)
I has a gas stove a few years ago and after I got used to it I fell in love with it! We moved 4 years ago and the house we moved into had a new flat top stove. I strongly dislike it! But, I can’t get rid of a new stove. I bet it lasts for 25 years! :) Until then, I will just dream of having gas again someday.
ramona potter says
I have gas! Would love gas stove top with electric oven. Have heard gas ovens give off more toxins of some sort.
rainbow says
have electric but prefure gas
Julie H says
Hi, I’m Julie and I have gas. hehe. I have a gas stovetop, which came in really handy after Hurricane Ike (I’m in Houston). But my oven is electric (and not connected to my stovetop) so I couldn’t bake for the 2 weeks we didn’t have power. I really like having the gas stovetop, even though I grew up on electric. My hubby grew up with gas so he had to help me adjust when our first apartment had a gas stove
Kathleen says
Hi, my name is Kathleen and I used to have gas but went gluten free and now I don’t! :) Oh….my stove? It’s electric, I’ve never cooked on a gas stove.
Kim says
Hi my name is Kim and i have electric, but I love to cook on gas. We cant get a gas stove in the house….. so I cook alot on my gas grill. TO me the food taste better and it cooks the food more evenly.
vickie says
Hello. My name is Vickie. I have gas!
Martha says
I *love* a gas stove! Had gas the first few years of our marriage, but we have electric now. A gas stove is wonderful to cook on!
Angela Hedican says
I’m Angela, and I have gas. I love having gas so much, that I wouldn’t finish our new house until the builder could assure me that I would have gas EVERY SINGLE DAY!! LOL
Lisha says
I have gas:) But, I could not always say that.
I had gas for the first time when I was an adult. Loved it. Still had gas when I got married. Still loved it. When I moved to the south, I no longer had gas:(
But, after living in this all-electric house for ten years, my husband showed me how much he really loves me. He had a gas line brought up to our house directly to the kitchen. It has one entry and one purpose: a new duel-fuel, double electric oven, gas cooktop stove! Nothing else in the house has gas or has the option of having gas. Just my sweet stove!
Yes, I have gas again! lol!
Melissa Horton says
Well…I don’t have gas, but I am flat on top!!! :) LOL!! I have a ceramic top stove, which I actually really like! It makes for extra counter space when preparing something that doesn’t involve cooking, and also is pretty easy to clean up after a spill over. Plain ole electric burners are not my fave…I’d pick gas over those…but I’ll enjoy being “flat on top” for now!
Wendy Hawkinson says
Hi, My name is Wendy. I have gas (and I love it!) :)
Jo says
My name is Jo and we have a gas stove. That was really funny and I got a good chuckle out of it!
Susan Alexander says
Electric here. I grew up with gas and I dream of a day when I can have gas again. ;) (Seriously though!)
Mary says
I have an electric ceramic top stove. It is easy to take care of and clean, however it is not recommended for use with my giant All American pressure canner so I haven’t been able to use the canner since we moved here. I wish I could say I have gas! I would like gas since I grew up with that, however, a standard coil electric would be fine too.
DreamingofSpring says
I use my canner anyway–has not damaged it and all of my jars have sealed beautifully–and no damage to my ceramic flat top either. I guess I am a rebel that way–but seriously never read the owners manual to the new canner until I actually had canned the whole garden–sometimes those tomatoes cannot wait :) I actually think my flat top does a better job than my electric coil did.
Kris Mays says
I actually cracked my top just making chicken stock in my stock pot on my ceramic stove. NO IDEA why. Now I am down one large burner. Very inconvenient when you have a big family to cook for.
DreamingofSpring says
Thats horrible–did you contact the manufacturer of your range–tha should not happen–I have canned with a pressure canner for the last 8 years on my ceramic top and no problems whatsoever–I would call the company and at least ask about it–Good Luck!
Cheryl says
I too have a ceramic electric stove and wish I had gas. One reason a glass top can crack is because heat gets transferred across the top away from the burners where it’s not supposed to be if you use a pan that is bigger than the burner. That is one reason why you shouldn’t use a typical water bath canner on a glass top. We have been using a Presto pressure canner on it with good success however. But the edges on the bottom are not touching the stove so that it is not too wide for the largest burner. And so far the weight of it hasn’t been a problem, even when we fill it with more water to use it as a water bath.
DreamingofSpring says
Thank You Cheryl! I was using my Presto pressure canner with good results and I also use it for water bath–obviously without the pressure top. I know that you can get a little rack for using larger pots–it disperses the heat and very slightly raises the pot on the stove, however, I forget the name of it though. I am so glad to have found this discussion as I was planning on getting a huge water bath canner and have come to the conclusion that it’s not a grea idea. I will just keep doing what I am doing for now. I am also thankful that I don’t have gas right now as it is sooo much more expensive than electric where we live. Thanks to all for the info! It would be a huge financial problem to replace our range and we also have a large family.
Kris Mays says
I can outside on my propane stove -right on the back deck. It works.
Rachel says
I have a question…my family is moving to Africa and I’m trying to decide if I should get a regular water bath canner or a pressure cooker canner? We are going to buy a gas stove and ship it over with all our household stuff and I’m not sure which is better to have. I haven’t cooked much with a pressure cooker, but since gas is so expensive, esp. in Rwanda, I thought cutting down cooking time would be a great idea anyway.
Jessica says
Hi my name is Jessica and I have gas. And I LOVE IT!! Honestly I can’t really compare them since the last time I had electric I barely knew how to boil water. The major advantage to gas around here is that I can still cook when the power’s out. That’s huge.
Jean says
It’s so funny that you posted this now. I grew up with gas and our first two houses had gas. But when we moved to this house almost 20 years ago, it had been an all-electric home that the previous owners had converted to gas but only to the laundry room for the dryer, furnace and water heater. The kitchen didn’t have gas and I was stuck with an electric stove. I knew that someday I would have gas again!!! We just had a gas line installed to the kitchen less than two months ago and I now have a beautiful new gas stove. I thought it would take a while to get used to after using electric for so long, but it only took one time!!!! I love how when you turn it on, it is immediately hot and when you turn it down, it is immediately down. Don’t know how I lasted so long with electric.
Rhoda says
I grew up with gas (0: but currently am without. We’re house hunting and I would LOVE the new place to be gassed!
Kathy says
I have gas, and I don’t mind admitting it. It is much better than when my two boys have gas! I loved your post! I have to agree, the best part of having gas (of the natural, piped into the house variety) is that when the power goes out, I can still make coffee (and dinner)! And we have gas logs in our fireplace, which gives us a backup heat source, too. Having gas can be a wonderful blessing!
Lynn says
Our family has gas. (That’s just fun to type;) We built our home 1 1/2 yrs ago and didn’t think twice about instaling a gas tank just for cooking. Electric has no comparision ( other than it’s hot too). I often find myself cooking over my 5 burner stove thanking the Lord for it.
Sara R. says
I currently have a glass-top electric stove and really don’t like it. I had a gas stove in college and LOVED it, as soon as my current stove dies we are getting gas again!
Terry says
I have gas and LOVE IT! Cooking with electric is very frustrating to me. I have had a ceramic cook top but never again. Give me gas any day! lol
Danielle B says
UGH… i never liked the ceramic top stoves! They take FOREVER to cool, and mine was always streaky!
Samantha says
Hello. My name is Samantha, and I am ELECTRIC! =]
Wish I had gas though. It’s what I grew up cooking on and when we moved into the home we are in now I burnt a few things adjusting to electric.. I hate not seeing the flame.
Sydni says
Hello, my name is Sydni and I no longer have gas. :( I had a gas stove at an apartment we lived in one time and loved it. Every other place I’ve ever lived has had an electric stove. Maybe some day, I too, will have gas again.
Janet says
Like most of the posters, I prefer gas. It cooks faster, plus I enjoy the fact that if the power goes out I can manually light the stove and oven. I owned an electric stove when an ice storm shut the power down for over a week. NOT fun wearing coats, sleeping bags and trying to cook on an antiquated coleman stove! LOL
Sandra says
I grew up with natural gas, back when gas really was all-gas and not something that required electricity to run the oven. We had a real broiler back then, too. And remember pilot lights? The heat from those made a warm place for dough to rise, and you could use them to light broom straws for lighting candles and the like without turning on a whole burner. That was before plastic broom straws, too, of course.
My first apartment away from home had gas, but when I got married we had electric for several years (and addresses). I hated it. There was no way to tell how hot the pot was going to get because there was no flame to observe. I boiled over a lot of things, and basically stopped trying to slow-cook anything on the stove. When we moved to this house twenty years ago, to my delight it lacked a stove and I was able to get someone to pipe propane to the kitchen from the furnace supply. Even though the oven is useless when the power is out, and the broiler is some wacky kind of electric thing in the oven, I can light the burners manually if I need to.
That said, I also have an electric microwave convection oven that I bought last summer. I love that for baking because it is smaller and does not heat the entire house up for my little two-person baking projects. I still would not give up my propane stove-top.
Marilyn K says
Hello my name is Marilyn, and I like having gas!
Sheila says
I have a gas range, per my demand, er, request when we moved into our current home. It had a ceramic top electric range, and I couldn’t WAIT to go back to gas. One big reason is for the sake of canning.
jerilyn says
lol. we have gas. It was borderline on our house list between a need & a want. It cooks so much better!
Nancy Michel says
I traded my 1 year old electric flat-top stove to a used appliance dealer for a stove and fridge for one of the apartments my husband & I owned and we dug out his 20+year old, double oven GAS stove to put in our house, shortly before we were married. I asked the appliance store owner if they still make parts for the older GAS stove. He said they still do make then as well as still make the double oven GAS stove that I have, but by special order only!!!He said that my “New to me” stove/double oven was worth repairing for a long time yet. We have had to replace a couple of parts but it works great and is now about 35 years old!! Yes, I have GAS!!!! ;))
Michelle says
I prefer my flat top electric cook top. Once you get used to how yours heats, I find it’s just as easy to cook on and way way way easier to clean.
Wendy says
I have both, I have dual fuel my to top is gas and my oven is electric.
Susan F says
I hate having gas. ;) I’ve seen our Pioneer Girl leader with burned off eyelashes, brows and hair when the gas oven blew up at our church when I was a kiddo. Year later my grandmother’s stove followed suit with my husband. Very scary. We talked her into an electric stove and we’ve had one ever since in our home.
Kris Mays says
I also worry about my children not being able to cook as early on if we had gas. So for safety reasons and pure laziness (I WANT my kids to cook), we keep electric.
Kris Mays says
I have an electric ceramic topped stove. I think I would rather have a gas stove top and an electric oven. But this is what I chose and I am living with it.
D says
Had the ceramic kind, now have gas. I couldn’t be paid to go back. Love the either on or it’s off of gas and the even cooking, plus these do not crack and cost $278 to replace, had that happen once. Love my gas!
Linda says
I have gas, but if the price keeps going up (propane) $2.69 gallon, I may have to switch. I really prefer gas.
Rose says
I have the ceramic type Electric stove. I was told not to use a canner on it so we boght a two burner gas portable stove that we can burn outside atached to a small propane tank. It works great. So I can save I have gas.
Relly got a big chuckle out of you exerience with a friend. Loved it!
Kare says
Yes, we have gas ~ all of us! =) And the thing I like most about it is that I feel I have so much more control. If I really want low, I can cook on low. I can reheat leftovers on the lowest setting and they will not burn.
This post was hilarious. I had to read it aloud to my 5 children because almost the exact same thing happened to us recently. Some friends of ours were over and the wife said to me “oh, do you guys have gas?” I answered and we carried on a few minute conversation about it. I never thought anything of it, but my boys had to step outside because they couldn’t contain themselves. =)
laura says
My name is Laura and we have propane.
Tracy says
Hello. My name is Tracy. I do not have gas.
{Kinda wish I did, though.}
Kris Mays says
This is sounding like AA for gas.
susan says
Hi my name is susan and i have GAS!! I love having gas. it was a big adjustment for me having grown up with electric, and honestly my dream kitchen might have an electric oven…though i think after having gas my whole married life (and my hubby doesn’t mind ;-)) i’m getting used to baking with it. I couldn’t be paid to go back, and if our next home has electric, one of the first things we would do is run a gas line for my stove. I adore my stove it is the 5 burner w/ a griddle. <3
amy@twobgardening says
My name is Amy and I have gas. :)
I love my gas stove, wouldn’t trade it for the world. It cooks very evenly unlike some electric stoves. I do a lot of cooking on my wood stove as well. It’s FREE. Love it!!
Mary J says
I just started reading your blog, and I loooove it!! Anyways, I have a flat top electric that I do not like one bit. I really really want gas (haha) when we move!
Bekah says
I grew up with electric, but I have gas now. I love it, but I would like an electric oven. I wouldn’t want to go back to an electric cook top, though.
When I was growing up, my brother & I would roast marshmallows over the electric burners. It takes a little longer, but they only catch fire if you touch them to the burner.
Jill says
Gas…just the word is cause for laughter in this house. I grew up with mostly electric, but my mom did most of the cooking. Once I had gas, I knew I’d never go back. Plus it’s a bit less expensive, an added bonus. If you get tired of this topic, we can talk about how everyone likes to cut their cheese.
Don’t tell my grandkids I said that, ha!
shellie says
I love gas! We’ve had both over the years (depending on what the rental had) and I’ve hated every time I’ve had to suffer with electric. Now that we own our own home I have gas, by choice, and wouldn’t have it any other way! When we lose power in the winter or during storms it can last for days and days so its a huge blessing to be able to cook for my family and still have heat too. We also use a wall mounted propane heater that does not require electricity. The only thing that would be better is when I get my long dreamed of wood cook stove! Heat, cooking, and hot water all in one unit with no propane or electric bill! Just the labor of cutting wood for free to run it. Can’t get any better than that! :)
Shawna says
Hi my name is Shawna and I have gas. Learned how to cook on gas and have no problems. I had electric in my apartment as a newlywed, my husband loved his mom’s pecan pies, so I thought I would bake him one. Took it out of the oven and put it on top of the stove and left the kitchen. A few min’s later heard an explosion. My pecan pie in my wedding gift glass pie pan was all over the kitchen. I guess the electric burner was still hot from dinner and caused it to break. I have never had electric since, nor have I ever made another pecan pie. I love gas!!!!
Marisa I. says
I have a ceramic electric stove, not by choice. I love gassss!! :{
I’m working on being satisfied with what I have.
Allison says
My name is Allison – we just moved and I finally have gas!! he he, I get to giggle over that one :)
Anitra says
My name is Anitra and I am electric :) – we just replaced our old style coil electric with a glass (ceramic?) topped one, and I am LOVING it!!
I can appreciate that with gas you get instant-heat and instant-off. But the ones I’ve used, it’s been a pain to re-light the pilot light, and a pain to clean (even worse than a coil electric, I think).
I grew up with an electric stove, so it’s what I am used to.
Jessica Atkins says
Hi. My name is Jessica and I have electric. I had gas for many years but we used electric when we rented a condo on vacation. My husband really liked it so when we needed a new stove we made the switch. I don’t really have a preference either way… I guess our electric does cook more evenly. Our previous gas stove was stronger on one side of the flame….

Hi, my name is Saralyn, and I won’t have anything but gas! I love the fact that you can adjust the heat instantly. The only trouble is the mess it makes of my copper-bottom pans. How about that, gas and a copper bottom!

Well, I have both electric and a gas stove. I have a gas stove in the basement that I do all my canning on. I also use it when the power goes out. It was a life saver in the !992 blizzard. My electric is a ceramic smooth top and it has been hard to get used to.

Is it true that you can only can on a gas stove? I don’t have gas (sorry for your problem! LOL!)and I have never learned to can, so I don’t know. It seems like the only factor would be the cooktop being able to get to a boiling point for canning, but, really, I am clueless.

I can on my ceramic top and have never had trouble.

Ohh, that was so funny! The closest I’ve ever actually come to ROFL!! : )
I’m Laura and I have electric. It is a ceramic cook-top. And I really don’t care which type I have. It doesn’t even bother me that my stove is not stainless steel. It works and I am very grateful for that!!

I have a friend that cans on her ceramic stove, but I just hate to chance it. It gets hot enough, but it is easy to scratch with the roughness of the canner bottom. I put all my canning stuff in my basement on shelves anyway so it is very convenient to do it all there. I have a kitchen down there and it works great. A gas stove is easier to regulate the heat on your pressure cooker. You have to be careful not to let it get too much pressure. I really do not enjoy canning, but my hubby loves to eat it. It is hard work!!!

I HAVE ELECTRIC. MY GRANDMA REFUSES TO COOK ON AN ELECTRIC STOVE. I MUST SAY HOWEVER, DURING AN ICE STORM WE HAD A YEAR AGO, WHEN ALL ELECTRIC WAS KNOCKED OUT FOR THREE WEEKS IN OUR LITTLE TOWN, MY SISTER’S GAS STOVE SAVED OUR BEHINDS!!! WE WOULD HAVE HAD NO WAY TO COOK HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR HER WONDERFUL GAS STOVE!! THEY ARE EXCELLENT TO HAVE IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY LIKE THAT.

Hello. My name is Amy and I have gas. When I bought my home it did not have gas in the kitchen so I shelled out quite a bit to have my lines altered to bring gas exactly where I wanted it.

My name is Kimberly and I don’t have gas. :) I wouldn’t mind having gas but I know it would be an adjustment since I’ve never cooked with gas before.

Before we bought our house we had gas in our apartment. I grew up with electric, so I learned the hard way (by burning through a couple of pans) that they cook things differently!
