I need a little help in the mopping arena.
I won’t show pictures of all the mops that haven’t worked for me…but if I were to do that, there would be a parade of them.
They either work one time and then stop working…or the little top spongy things gets crusty and gross after I’ve mopped with it twice. Or the head falls off after a few uses.
Maybe it’s because I’m buying cheap mops?
Spending lots of money on a mop doesn’t really make me feel joy or excitement.
Wonder what kind of mop June Cleaver used? Maybe I should wear my high heels when I mop? (I don’t own any high heels.)
We’ve now chucked all of our mops and begun using a bucket of warm water (sometimes with Basic H) and an old wash rag on our hands and knees. It beats anything else we’ve ever tried.
Except for the “maybe we just won’t clean our floors” idea. That doesn’t seem to work either.
What kind of mop do YOU use? Have you found one that really works for you?! WILL YOU COME OVER AND DEMONSTRATE IT FOR ME on all the levels of my house (every Tuesday)?
P.S. Most of my house is has hard wood floor if that makes any kind of difference in your advice. Thanks!

I have found that using plain ol’ water mixed with some vinegar works best.
I boil a big pot of water, empty in the mop bucket. I put a new pot of water to boil. When the mop water starts to get a bit brown, I change it out.
I change the water frequently. Every time I pour new water in, I boil more water. My floor seems to stay cleaner longer with this method. I use a liberman mop.
Someone a long time ago told me to use just water. That using a cleaner will leave residue that will attract dirt.
I have also found this true with carpet. When I steam vac it I use a solution of water and vinegar.

Since moving from Australia to the US, I have been sooooo frustrated with the mops I’ve tried here … so returning from a holiday, back home, I bought my favourite mop back with me … The Vileda Supermocio Mop .. it is lightweight, strong and great!!! …
n.b … I have since found out they sell Vileda mops at target :D
Brianna @ Heart(h) Management says
Laura, I finally found a mop that I like decently. I’ve tried roller mops, a swiffer type mop, and the hands and knees method.
The mop I use is a Vileda mop. Here’s a link. http://international.vileda.com/com/products/show/32/3
I’m thinking that I may have purchased it at Walmart? Profuse apologies if this one has already been in your parade! :)

I have a Scooba – it’s a robot that mops. It’s definitely spendy as far as mops go, but it is so wonderful. I use a Swifer wet jet for touch ups, but the Scooba does my weekly mopping for me when I’m out of the house running errands.
Jai@wifeof1momof4 says
I have purchased cheap and not so cheap and have found I have this problem no matter how many dollars were spent on the mop.
I will say I have been using bleach and water w/ a little soap and may have found a great mop the last time I purchased one a few weeks ago.
Rubbermaid ole fashioned mop, blue threads, black handle, but the mop is tied together and has a squeeze function so I won’t have to touch the water. I used it today and was SO happy. The floors are clean and my mop is still in one piece.
Amy @ Finer Things says
I’m a hands and knees scrubber. A mop doesn’t work for me. But, oh… my volleyball knee pads save the day every time!

I have a puppy that makes my hardwood floors need cleaning a bit more often than desired….I love the orangeglo products…I use one mop head to sweep with (I vacuum the stuff off of it when it’s full), and another to use for the orangeglo product. In between those, though, b/c of my puppy, I wipe them down with vinegar and water. Nice end result. Even if you don’t like the orangeglo mixture (and price), the actual mop is not that bad.
Joelle says
You know, I hate most kinds of mops (whether the stringy kind or the sponge type), but I really love the mop that I have now. I got it on Amazon and it is a Simplee Cleen microfiber swivel head mop. It is best for light jobs. But if you mop frequently enough you shouldn’t have too much buildup, I would hope. What I love about these microfiber things is that I can take them off the swivel head and throw them in the wash afterwards! Works for me. :)
Condo Blues says
My cheap mops used to fall apart too. Then I switched to the swiffer type and they’d eventually break too. I took it as a sign and bought a Bissel floor cleaner. I bought a reconditioned one and still more money than I wanted to pay but I figured I’d probabbly already spent $60 in mops that eventually broke so I just did it. Works great.
Lisa@Blessedwithgrace says
I love my swiffer!

I am a hands and knees scrubber with a bucket of warm water. I don’t even own a mop. Sorry I am worthless on this subject. On a side note, we have the EXACT same table and chairs that you have!
Laura Beth says
My favorite mopping solution for years was old washcloths on the head of my swiffer (I’d just poke them in the little holes meant to hold on the swiffer pads). Hot water and an appropriate cleaning agent (vinegar, bleach) and they worked great. If one got too yucky while I was mopping, I just put another one on, then threw them all in the wash with bleach. Cheap and easy.
I’ve really been enjoying your site. Made your homemade hamburger buns last night. Thanks!

I use a Bissell steam cleaner, too. The steam disinfects as it cleans which is lovely (read: one less step for me and does not require me to bend over). I just fill it up with filtered water from the fridge and go. Works fabulously.
The sweeping part is what gets me. We have two dogs that shed and it is hard to keep up with them. lol.

I have a steam mop and really like it. Although I don’t use it as often as I should!

I do the same thing as someone above that said they stick washcloths in their swiffer. It actually works pretty well. We have hardwood too, and about once every couple of weeks, I actually just spray dusting stuff everywhere and stick a dry cloth on the end of my swiffer and go over it. It keeps dirt away and I don’t have to sweep up the nasty little dust bunnies as often. plus, with all the dog hair we have…I take anything that makes it easier to get off my floor.
Kim Taylor says
We have almost all hardwood. My hubby is a hardwood flooring guy and is particular about what i use. Does not want water on the floor altough I have mopped lots before. I now use bona microfiber mop. it sprays the hardwood floor cleaner out (also bona) and you push it and thats it. the microfiber clothes velcro on and you can throw them in with the wash load. btw my hubby is really not that intense about it. You should see our floors with the abuse of 4 kids and a dog.
Angie @ Many Little Blessings says
The only thing that really works for me is hands and knees mopping. But, one of my knees is really bad. Maybe I need to try knee pads and see if that helps!
Amanda (Crunchy Christian Mom) says
I don’t know what brand I use, but it’s the big, flat rectangular kind with a washable cover. No sponge, just cloth. I rinse the cloth with hot water and spray simple green on it. For linoleum and hardwood. My floors need a LOT of mopping, too!
Tasha says
I have one from Orange Clean, it’s a microfiber head, I love it! It’s made for wood floors too.
jen says
umm I had this super neat super cool infomercial mop and it was horrible so…
YES! We should just stop mopping. How often DO you mop? And don’t go bragging about it too much in my comment section I’ve convinced hubby that women and mopping is so 2000 and not compatible with the women’s movement.
Jill Roper says
I use my knees, a bucket of warm water and some Basic H. Works great. I do however dry as I go. Hardwood floors are best done quickly so no water stays on so I have an extra small towel that I drag with me and dry as I go. It is much faster on my knees and alot more thorough.
I am too cheap to buy a mop!
Karen@faithfamilyfibro says
We have used every kind of mop there is. We used the old fashioned spongey type that you wring out, swiffers (wet and dry), orange glo was the first microfiber mop which is nice because you can wash the fabric and use any kind of floor cleaner. We have to dust mop then wet mop our hardwood because of our big baby, the dog. But to save money and not use swiffers or floor cleaner, we purchased the fly lady mop. We dust mop with one then use a vinegar, water mixture and wet mop with the other. We can rewash and rewash the fabric and the holder is sturdy enought that we won’t have to buy another for a long time. I enclosed a link to them if you are interested. They have lots of cool products. http://www.flylady.com/pages/FlyShop_mop.asp

I, too, use the mop with the washable cloth cover. I originally bought it from The Clean Team (see their website). Sun and Earth sells a nice one, too. In fact, I got one free from them with my last order. Yeah! These mops swivel and get everything except directly around the table legs.

I have had this problem, as well! I finally found a mop that works for me-the Lieberman WonderMop. I love that it can be thrown in the wash! I wish I had one of those steam mops-anyone know how much they cost?
Multi-Tasking Mommy says
I use a swiffer wet and a swiffer wetjet, but I do hate using the chemicals. they are just so much easier than filling a pail with water and using the horrible mops that never work for me either.
I wish I had advice for ya!
My question is how often people do wash their floors.
Lenetta says
I don’t mop much – just have two small pieces of linoleum. I do hope you do a review on what you end up picking, though!
Kasey says
I use a Clorox Ready Mop (similar to a Swiffer but you can fill it with your own solution). I fill mine with vinegar and water. I use a microfiber cloth on the bottom that is the same size as the disposable cloths you can use with it. The mop does not take batteries like the Swiffer does. It used gravity to spary the solution. I have been very happy with this and have been using it for about a year now. I had a hard time finding a Clorox Ready mop but I finally found one at Ace Hardware.
Amanda says
We have all hardwood floors in our house too. I really like what I use. It’s called a “dutch rubber broom” by Euroshine. You can use it as a broom or a mop. To use as a mop you just take a washcloth, rag, whatever and dip it in your cleaning solution and put it on the floor, then put the broom on top of it. The broom has little “fingers” that scrub the floor. We really like it! Plus it’s a mulit-tasker! You can sweep, mop, clean cobwebs, scrub your walls, and so much more! Now…to tell you about my homemade cleaners! :)
Karen says
I use a Swiffer for spot cleaning only, because I hate the chemicals and using all the pads. (I just keep the same pad on until it’s really dirty.) But I finally found a mop I like – this ocedar self twisting one. The swishing motion of the mop “strings” really cleans well, it’s easy to wring out, and you can wash the mop head. Plus, you could use it as a dust mop, if need be. It’s the best one I’ve ever owned!
Christy says
I use and love the Libman Wonder Mop! My whole first floor is tile…so hands and knees mopping quickly tired me out.
Superchikk says
I’m with you. We have “dirt” colored tile floors, and I am not a fan of the mopping. With a dog and a kid, I usually end up spot cleaning all the time anyway. When I get really grossed out, I take a spray bottle of windex or vinegar – whatever I have handy – and a wet rag.
Mary Ellen ~ Carolina Momma says
A coworker and I were just talking about this yesterday! I’ll take a bucket and an old wash cloth over a mop any day! For cleaning, I’m starting to use just water and vinegar on all our flooring (we have hardwoods and tile).
onemotherslove says
I have a mop that’s made for wood floors, so it doesn’t hold a lot of water to puddle up. My problem is that I have laminate floors, which also shouldn’t have a lot of water pooling on it, but I always get a cloudy appearance after mopping. It’s very frustrating. I’ve tried all kinds of cleaners & homemade mixtures.
Lorrie says
I am having the same problem. I am looking forward to reading what works for others.
Step says
I have just a plain, old butterfly action sponge mop that I use on my hardwood floors. It does the job for me, but I will get down on my hands and knees about 3x per year to do a really thorough job. I just use vinegar and warm water.
Milehimama says
I have a Vileda Ready mop (sold at Target and Walmart, but it’s on the bottom shelf in a box). I bought mine 3 years ago and LOVE it.
Best Mop Ever
It works like a Swiffer, but is reusable. I’ve used it on linoleum, vinyl, tile, laminate, and engineered hardwood and it’s seen me through 4 rental houses, still going strong.
Plus, it’s easy enough for the kids to use.
I used to have the Libman Wondermop, but had problems (more than once) with the nut holding the mophead onto the stick rusting over – and then I couldn’t get it off to wash it.
I usually use vinegar and water, and once in a while the teal Mr Clean because the smell makes me happy.
In my little bathroom – it’s about 3’x4′ – I just use a washcloth for the floor. I can just about reach every corner from the door, and the bigger mop is more trouble than it’s worth.
Michele says
I can’t really help on the mop (I might try some of these suggestions) but to avoid the dirty water in the bucket I use an old liquid dish soap container and put a little vinegar and water in it. I then keep a bucket with hot water in it. I squirt the solution on the floor out and then rinse my mop in the bucket. I then change my mop water frequently. It keeps from throwing additional cleaners down the drain. I am just changing the water.
Megret says
I love my microfiber mop (it’s green — Libman, maybe?). We have hardwoods, too, and I wanted to ensure I didn’t get the floors TOO wet while mopping. I use Mrs. Meyer’s all-purpose cleaner, diluted in a spray bottle, and spray as I go (wet mop first with water). It works beautifully; no streaks, and you can take the microfiber pad off and wash it in hot water EVERY time you mop.
Hope this works!
Meshellyn says
We have really used every type of mop too! I grew up having to scrub on my hands and knees and disliked that so much we’ve tried everything. Sponge mops, old fashioned mops, swiffers, etc. My DH recently bought me a SHARK STEAM MOP after I’d been eyeing one for quite awhile. He picked it up at BB&B using a 20% coupon which is much cheaper than ordering it online or by phone. We are loving it! We also have hardwood and it looks great after steaming. It’s even picked up some of the scuffs and stuck on food that I know has lived on our floor for months because I wasn’t getting down on my hands and knees while pregnant to clean it up! We love ours and I would bet you would too!
Tania says
I have been using a hot bucket of water with vinegar and a rag. That works fine most of the time since I also haven’t found a mop I like. But being 34 weeks pregnant and scrubbing the floor has my husband threatening to buy a mop so he can help out. I am all for that!
Hunie says
I clean my hardwood floors on my hands and knees with a damp cloth. I use cleaner for wood and as I wash with the damp cloth, I quickly dry with another cloth. I then use (don’t do this if you are prone to slipping)lemon oil for wood. I sprinkle it about and then rub into the wood. It leaves a glorious shine.
Chris says
I use a shark steam mop on my hardwood floors, and it works awesome!!!!! I have tried tons of mops and so far this works best, beside on my hands and knees cleaning. It was pricey but to me worth it, and you can make your own mop pads out of old towels and add velcro, I think those worked better than what the mop came with! hope that helped a little!
Sharon says
I’ve got a Vileda mop I bought at Walmart. It was the supermocio cotton/microfiber Pretty inexpensive and I love the fact that it can go in the washer. I bought 2 of the “heads” and rotate through them. I also only use water and vinegar.
My friend, swears by the sh-mop by the clean-team. (http://www.thecleanteam.com/productdetail.cfm?id=microfiber%20cloths) … but since my Vileda is cheap and still works 4 years later, I’m sticking with it.
Susan Anderson says
Has anyone tried the norwex mop that is advertised on urban homemaker?…it’s a little pricey but wonder if it’s worth the price ..we use just an old-fashioned dust mop for dirt & dog fur and then I spray w/the Bona hardwood spray and use rags on my hands & knees…I find the Swifter streaks & leaves sort of a film on the hardwoods when we use it?…I’m going to try the vinegar/hot water route…Thanks!

I use an old swiffer with a washrag that I can just throw in the hamper when I’m done. I fill spray bottle with vinegar and water. We have the same table and chairs too–hand-me-downs when we first got married!

So I have a rather large kitchen floor and wanted a mop that would cover more territory quickly. I got the janitor-style cotton mop at Sam’s for about $12. A bag of refills (cotton heads) are about $6. I splurged and got the janitor-style water bucket too ($39). I really like this mop. One tip though, don’t run the mop heads through the wash without putting them in bags first!! (Think shredded cotton everywhere!!) :)
Brittany says
We also have mostly wood floors. I use a Swiffer that we received as a housewarming gift. Instead of using the chemical-laden wipes (which give me a headache), I use a rag soaked in a mix of vinegar and water. Our old newborn prefolds fit perfectly on the Swiffer!
Mrs. Q says
Well, I don’t have wood floors. But I imagine my mop would work on any surface.
I use a dishrag wrapped around the head of my broom. I stole the idea from my sister-in-law who lives in Mexico City. They don’t have mops down there.
I don’t have to spend money replacing the head, or pads, or whatever else they have on mops now days. Just dunk the dishrag (dishtowel) into the sudsy hot water and tie it around the head of your broom. I like to put the “scubby” side of the dish towel on the outside to aid me in my mopping.
When you’re done, just throw the rag in the wash and voila! Instant reusable mop head :)
Hope that helps!
Blessings!

Lately I haven’t been able to use a mop, as I gave mine to the girls (with 12 bedrooms they needed it more than I did!). But then my floor wasn’t getting clean, and finally I couldn’t stand it anymore. So, I found an old hand towel. And I didn’t get down on hands and knees and scrub the floors like Cinderella. I spray the floor with bleach/water, then wet and ring the towel out, lay it flat on the floor, and standing on the towel I scootch it across the floor till my floor is nice and clean:-)
Sarah says
Have you heard of a Shark Steam Mop??? A good friend of mine just got one and she LOVES it. I’ve been waiting to get one as it is a little pricey. But she loves it and has hard wood floors and says it does a great job on them. The best part, I think, is that since it uses steam it’s ready to go whenever you need it. It takes about 30 seconds to warm up and then your ready. So, if you’ve just got one spot, you don’t have to fill up a whole bucket. Plus, you don’t use cleaning supplies which is green on so many levels and not to mention non toxic. Here’s the link:
https://sharksteammop.com/contents/index.aspx
They sell these at Wal-Mart, Target, Bed Bath & beyond and lots of other places. If you ever get Bed Bath And Beyond coupons for 20% off this would make it a lot cheaper.

We use Bruce. No he is not a faithful butler. We found Bruce at Lowes after my SIL recommended it. You can check it out here: https://www.bestfloorcleaners.com/Detail.bok?no=23.
I did break my first mop by scrubbing too hard, but they replaced it for me and it has worked well. But I still use my fingernail to get up stuck on stuff because no amount of scrubbing with any mop with get off dried gunk – I’m just saying . . .
momstheword says
I just use my sponge mop on my hardwoods. I did them once on my hands and knees (kneeling on a garden pad) and decided I wasn’t going to do that again, lol!
Larissa Smith says
Ok, I live in Peru and their method here actually works really well. They have mops, but the sponge heads have no way to squeeze out the water. So they buy large cleaning cloths (maybe 2′ by 2′) and cut a slit or X in the center. Then they dunk the cloth down in the mop water (water with Pine Sol or soap or vinegar), ring it out, then slide the rag down the mop handle and flop it over the head and proceed to mop with it, so the front edge is folded under and the back edge trails out behind. When the front part is dirty, they spin the cloth to use the other side before removing it and dunking it again. I know it seems a little more work-intensive, but your mop head never wears out or gets disgusting, the cloth can be tossed in the washing machine and easily replaced when it is worn from scrubbing. Plus, since the mop is never dunked in the water, it won’t leave a heavy trail of water on your wood floors, which means you don’t have to come back and hand-dry it.
Hope that helps!

I too have struggled with finding a good mop and am finally a happy mopper! I have mostly hard wood floors, 2 sons, a husband who excavates (as in digs ponds – lots of muddy shoes and clothes) and a shedding basset hound. I have 2 hot pink cloths that stick on a green mop. They are made by Orange-glow and came in a box with some cleaner that was just so-so. These cloths are great – I mop and then drop them in the washer. The real trick though is what to mop with! I boil a family size tea bag in the microwave for 3-4 minutes and then add more water and a little vinegar. I dip my cloth in the tea and stick it on the mop handle. I carry the tea around so I can rinse out my rag in it. I know this sounds crazy but it is the best thing I have found. I got both the tea and vinegar ideas from a book called something like “The Queen Cleans Everything”. Some kind of acid in the tea is good for the wood and helps with scratches and wear, while the vinegar is a well known cleaning agent. I hope you will try it – I am really happy to have a mopping solution that doesn’t leave a film on my floor. So many times I would mop and later that day see footprints all over the floor. One last thing – I have a swiffer vacuum that is lightweight, bagless and plugs in to the wall to charge. What ever the vacuum doesn’t pick up the swiffer sheet will get. I do this generally twice a day to keep the dirt (and horrid dog hair) at bay. Happy mopping!

I looked for years for a mop I liked, and what I use now is the Swiffer mop, but with microfiber cloths from the dollar store as heads. I just run them under hot water, wring well, and attach them. The first time I used this, I couldn’t believe the amount of dirt plain old hot water and a microfiber cloth got off the floor. Now I wouldn’t use anything else!

I use the bissel steam cleaner. Love love love it! My dad got it for me as a birthday present (my request!). Don’t use Orange Glow on your wood floors. It leaves a build up that makes your floors look dull so you have to keep using Orange Glow more and more which just makes it worse and worse! If you are set on using something, try Bona, which is a non toxic wood floor cleaner. Good stuff! =)

I use the Real Simple mop available at Target. It’s a sponge head covered with microfiber. The heads fall apart every few months, though, and though they’re supposed to be machine washable, it seems to hasten their demise. The map does have a scraper/scrubber doohickey in the handle, though, which is nice.
I’ve got my eye of the Shark steam mop too. Nice to hear the good reviews…maybe it’s a good use for my 30% off coupon at Kohl’s!

I have a hoover floor mate that is far better than any mop I have ever used. I love that it sucks the dirty water back up into the machine. It vacuums, washes, and dries the floor by allowing you to suck up any extra water.
Ranee @ Arabian Knits says
Libman Wondermop! It is the best mop out there. I use hot water and vinegar for the regular clean, add some castile soap if things are really grubby. If you have trouble with ants, adding some borax to the hot water will help keep them down.
Ranee @ Arabian Knits says
Forgot to mention, I fill the tub with the water and cleaner instead of using the bucket (not all the way, of course) and then I scrub the tub after mopping and drying the floor.
Veggiemomof2 says
I think the scooba idea would be good for you since you said almost the entire house is hardwood. My husband agrees that there shouldn’t be much water on hardwood floors!
Michelle Hall says
I use a Libman Microfiber Mop/swiffer. I have looked for 18 years for something I’d like. I like the swiffer Idea but wanted natural cleaners and didn’t like the waste of the wipe everytime. I have many children and dirty floors often. I can wet this with really hot tap water and then wipe. Or I use a industrial spray bottle with a mixed solution of Green works or vinegar and water. I can spot spray or with linolium; spray, wait and then mop. I have 2 mop heads so, I can use one while washing one.
This has been the best solution to our floors. I know these are safe for wooden floors as long as you don’t soak the mop head with water. I found mine at Walmart. It wasn’t too expensive yet, not really cheap either. For this frugal mom; well worth the investment. I’ve had it for 2 years and still going strong.
Good luck with your search!

I know this is a super old post, but I just had to chime in!
I have a Bissell Steam Mop that I LOVE SO MUCH!!! It doesn’t require any chemicals, just plain ol’ water. And the pads on the bottom are terry cloth, so they just require a toss in the washing machine and they’re good as new! So it’s a very “green” product. PLUS, it’s super easy to use, and my floors are CLEAN after I’m done. It does say that it can be used on sealed hardwoods, not sure if that would work for you or not. I use it on my tile floors mostly.

I use the Norwex mop and I love it! It omes with a dry pad and a wet pad. You quickly sweep up with the dry and then put on the wet pad (which you dampen in the sink with only water) and then wash with that. The wet pad has silver embedded in the pad that acts as a disinfectant so there is no need to use bleach or soap. After that is all done, you can use the same mop to dust the walls and wash them too. We have 9 foot ceilings and have been able to reach all the way up with the mop. Just need to put in the wash when it’s dirty. go to norwex.com to find out how to purchase the mop.
Wendy says
I love the clorox wide surface mop…it has a large surface area with a foam cushion, with a mircofiber cover. There are other brands with a similar concept. You just dampen the cover, put it on the mop. Then I have a spray bottle with about 2 tbls of murphys oil soap, the rest water. mist a small area of floor, then mop, and go through the wood floors this way. It really works well, drys quickly. Wood floors should not be mopped with a traditional mop as there is too much water, the less moisture when you mop the better. if water pools at all it gets between the wood flooring stips and makes your floors not last as long. Hope this helps

When it comes to the advancement of cleaning your home one of the latest gadgets that people are going crazy over are steam mops. For a very long time, the unfortunate chore of cleaning your floors would involve getting on your hands and knees and really giving it a good scrub. How painful is that? But it was a sacrifice that had to be made if you wanted to disinfect and get into those areas that are hard to reach on your wood, stone, and tile floors.

If you want a mop that is chemical-free, uses water to clean ONLY, and actually works better than anything else out there, check out the Norwex mops. They remove 99% of bacteria from a surface when following the proper use and care instructions (FDA certified). They can be used on porcelain, ceramic, linoleum, stone, wood, and more. I use mine for regular maintenance, as well as for “protein spills” and all of the glorious surprises we find from children and pets alike. They run $90 to $120 each, but include a washable wet and dry pad as well as an adjustable telescopic mop handle. The swiffer handle is puny by comparison. I have owned both.
You can host a party (in person or online) if the price is too steep for you and earn one for free. I am never going back to disposable sheet systems.
