Many people assume that you either have to live on a farm or live in a big city in order to find sources for healthy food.  Not true at all!  I live neither on a farm, nor in a big city.  I live in a small town with two locally owned grocery stores and a Wal-mart.  The nearest Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers stores are about an hour away – which means we are only privileged to shop in those stores a few times a year when we happen to be in the city for appointments or soccer games.

So what are my options?  I buy from farms close-by, I buy from a food co-op, I buy online, and I buy the rest from our local grocery stores and Wal-mart.  When I do happen to be in the city and can shop at a more specialized whole foods store, it’s a blast!  But since those opportunities are rare, I sure do love having access to the internet and my food co-op!

What food do I often buy to have on hand to prepare healthy meals and snacks?  You’ll find that detailed list here.  Even better, I have a printable Real Food Grocery Check-List included in my Let’s Do This! eCourse, which is very helpful to have in your kitchen as you transition to real food cooking. (That eCourse is a part of our amazing Real Food Reality Resources Package.  Did you get yours yet?!)

Let these detailed lists offer you guidance as you transform your kitchen.  Anytime I find online sales on these whole food ingredients, I always share them with you within a post so that you can benefit too.  The ability to order healthy food ingredients online is a wonderful blessing!

I feel blessed to live in a city where I do have a good whole foods co-op, Trader Joes and organic selections at my grocery stores. I also order online at azure standard and love their things.

I love your blog. I like to read how others make real food work. I am constantly looking for ways to put real food to work so well the people in the family say, “Wow! You made this?” Hah! My family loves the butterhorns. The Cinnamon rolls – they rock. We are amazed. I am currently trying hard to get your bread recipe to work in my bread machine. First loaf went well, second…not so well. I was out of gluten, so your recipe worked. So, now that I have gluten, I will try a few more recipes.

I work on keeping basic staples on hand at all times. Beans, rice, grain, sugar, etc. When you have those, meals are possible most any time.

I have been buying Rumiano grass-fed butter from Azure Standard and it comes out to $2.12 a pound right now. What do you think of this butter compared to Willow Maid?

Aprappo topic, I just finished a whirlwind stock up session. Yesterday it was Trader Joe’s and Woodman’s (a local large grocery store with a large natural foods section). This morning it was the indoor farmer’s market for more eggs and some bacon, then Metcalf’s (a local grocery store) that features lots of local products, for some nearly organic Sassy cow milk, white cheddar and some more produce. I love this store because they put signs on the local food telling you home many miles it took to get there. Last weekend I was at whole foods and later this month I plan to hit Penzy’s to annual spice replacement (anything heavily used that is over a year old get’s replaced)

This series has been really great! I haven’t been able to read through it all like I’d like, but what I have read has been so helpful. Especially this resource page. I have the rest of the series pinned to catch up on when I have a little more time!
