Tropical Traditions Giveaway: Organic Palm Shortening!
Tropical Traditions is at it again…ready to give away one of their awesome products! If you just read this post about how to make Whole Wheat Pie Crust using Organic Palm Shortening, then you are for sure going to want to try to win this giveaway!

So, what is Palm shortening? Read what Tropical Traditions says about it:
Palm shortening is derived from palm oil (read about Virgin Palm Oil here). In its natural state, palm oil is a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with most of the unsaturated fat being monounsaturated fat. Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. The melting point of our Organic Palm Shortening is 97 degrees F., making it very shelf stable. It is NOT hydrogenised, and contains NO trans fats! It is great for deep-fat frying and baking, and is not prone to rancidity.
I use Palm shortening to fry my Chicken Nuggets and French Fries, Salmon Patties, Onion Rings, Whole Wheat Donuts…any food that requires frying. Oh, and of course for a pie crust! Palm Shortening has no flavor, so it doesn’t not alter the taste of the food. Plus, it’s inexpensive. A big bucket of Palm Shortening will last me quite a while! I love that it is such a wonderful, healthy alternative to crisco!! Hurray, we can use shortening again!

I’m so glad a friend sent me a link to this giveaway. I threw out my Crisco last year and started using lard for pie crusts and biscuits. But halfway through the package, I realized the fine print says the lard is a combination of lard and hydrogenated lard. ARGH! That’s just what I was trying to get away from! I couldn’t find a good shortening substitute — until now. Thank you for letting us know about reasonable alternatives!

Sounds great :)

I didn’t know that there was ANY close, healthy equivalent to crisco. I’d just given up on using any recipes that called for shortening!
