Teaching Your Kids about Money with DoughMain

By Laura · Nov,30 2011

As a general rule, our kids are not “spenders”.  We’re working to teach them to work hard to earn their money, to give, to save and occasionally if it’s necessary or much desired and well planned out – to spend.  This time of year has been a perfect one to help our kids figure out a budget for spending, as I mentioned with our Christmas shopping outing last week!

I’ve been recently introduced to DoughMain, a FREE site which offers a chore tracker, an online calendar and three financial games – all which are designed to help you in your goals to be organized and to teach your kids healthy finance skills.  Your whole family can use the Online family Calendar to track events, activities and deadlines.  You can even color code it for each child.

The Chore Tracker is again color coded, and easy to set up for your family.  You can assign chores to your kids, set the frequency, and either manually approve the chores or have them auto-approved.  If you have a SmartPhone, you can even check your child’s chore progress while you’re at the grocery store.  Toilets clean…check!  (Just what you always wanted to do while you stand in line waiting to pay for food.)  ;)

My favorite part of the DoughMain site, however, may be the Money Games for Kids.  I love providing opportunities for them to learn while they don’t even know they’re learning.  There are three different money games:  one for children ages five and up; one for children ages 8-12; and one for teens, to help them learn to manage their finances independently.  Since I have a child or two in each category, I’ll be utilizing these games to help our kids learn more about smart spending.

And remember, this is all free to you.  Check out DoughMain to see if it might be a helpful tool for your family!
