Coffee Smell vs. Coffee Taste – Question #58
ByCoffee.
LOVE the way it smells. Really, REALLY don’t like the way it tastes.
When I was little, I thought that drinking coffee was part of being a cool grown up. I loved the way coffee drinkers held their mugs. I loved the way coffee drinkers happily sipped their steaming drink.
And I LOVED the smell of coffee brewing each morning.
It just smelled so…cozy and comfortable.
I figured that when I was older and allowed to drink coffee, I would just love it! I thought that I’d be able to sit there with the grown-ups and look cool while I sipped my coffee too.
And then I tried some.
YUCK! Seriously? THIS is what coffee tastes like?
I was in shock. That is not the taste I expected to go along with the great smell and the cool coffee sipping.
Later I gave it another try…this time with cream and sugar. Lots and lots of sugar.
Nope…nothing could mask that taste for me.
To this day, I just can’t drink coffee. I can’t even eat a coffee flavored jelly bean.
Oh, but I still love the way it smells.
Matt doesn’t like coffee either, so I LOVE it when we have house guests who like to drink it. We have a tiny little coffeepot. When we have overnight guests, with hope and a gleam in my eye I always ask them if they’d like me to make coffee for them in the morning. I LOVE it when they say yes because when I make it I get to smell it brewing!! Mmmm!
So…are you a coffee drinker? How do you take your coffee?
If you are a coffee drinker, will you PLEASE come over some time so I can brew coffee for you?! Please?

I have never and will never be a coffee drinker. Tea and hot chocolate are just too wonderful to need to drink that awful stuff. But I too just LOVE the way it smells. My husband, a mega die-hard coffee drinker, always brings the bag over to me when he opens a fresh one so I can smell the grounds. Yummmmm… How can something so delightful smelling end up tasting so yucky when it’s brewed?

i just adore people like you! i can’t think of anything i love how it smells but hate how it tastes. i got my husband hooked on coffee at the ripe old age of 44! it’s never too late. :)
have you tried flavored coffees? they are totally different. i’m sipping on some french vanilla cream right now. so sweet on its own, i don’t need to add any sugar. it’s amazing.

I think the EXACT way to do! Every word!!!! I enjoy houseguests who like coffee and I love the smell, but I don’t like the taste. I think we might actually be the same person ?!?!?

I made it through college, grad school, early morning commutes and three babies without coffee. I always told my co-workers I didn’t need “artificial enthusiasm.” But when our first foster baby came to us at a day old, I couldn’t keep my eyes open! My husband poured me a cup of mostly cream and sugar and a bit of coffee and then worked me up to a couple tablespoons of creamer in a cup of very strong joe. Now my problem is weaning myself off the artificial-everything creamer! Currently I’m at three drops of vanilla stevia, a teaspoon of sugar, and a splash of milk. Anyone have a “good for you” version of Coffeemate?

i love real cream, or simple whole milk, with your preferred sweetener and some dark chocolate cocoa powder…. makes a mean “mocha breve!”

I make my own creamer. I do a simple syrup of 1 C dehydrated cane
juice to 1 cup water and a tsp of vanilla extract (which is a lot)
, bring up to a simmer until it’s all melted, then take it off the
heat and let it cool. Store in the fridge. This is very sweet, but
I add just a little to my cup, then some coffee to heat it up,
then a little cream. It’s awesome. You could do any natural extract
you want.

I don’t usually like it. But on occasion, I’ll drink a cup…black. I love the way it smells!

I don’t care for coffee, I love the smell just like you, but I do drink it sometimes. My favorite way is Starbucks frappuccinos. Really, the mocha and pumpkin spice are the best and it doesn’t taste much like coffee at all :) but on occasion when I really want to brew it and smell it and not waste it, I will get 3-4 teaspoons of sugar and then I will either use ready whip or whip some cream myself (with sugar of course) and put that in it, and it is pretty good, if you put enough in. Flavored coffee’s help sometimes. I usually only take a few sips though and smell it and hold the cup and feel it’s warmth.

Okay, somebody’s got to be the first to say it, I LOVE COFFEE! And, I LOVE strong COFFEE, too. I love the smell of it brewing, I love the feel of the mug in my hand as I cradle the steaming goodness, I love the velvety taste in my mouth. I grew up in Rhode Island where coffee milk is the “official drink of Rhode Island”. They actually make a syrup that you pour into your milk to make coffee milk. I loved the syrup as a kid, but now I find it too sweet. Based on that upbringing, I guess I was bound to drink coffee as an adult. My husband and I have a Starbucks Barista espresso machine and we each have one latte a day. On busy mornings we will brew a pot of drip coffee and we enjoy that too. I’m not an all-day-long coffee drinker. One cup in the morning is all we have. And, I don’t even care whether it’s caffeinated or not. I just like the taste of coffee with a splash of half-n-half or whipping cream, no sugar. The key to enjoying coffee is that it has to be good quality coffee. We live in the Pacific Northwest where coffee is a pretty big deal. :o) So, we’re pretty snobby about our beans! We love Peets coffee–it’s always so fresh and robust.

I think I’m still too young to drink coffee ;-) (ha)
I’ve trained my children well to enjoy the coffee aisle at the grocery store… breathe deeply… mmmm, doesn’t that SMELL delicious?! … but it tastes y.u.c.k.y.
My teenage daughters, however, have been out with their youth group leaders enough to learn to like it with lots of flavor (cream and sugar, etc.) added. DH even took them to Starbucks one night when we were all out shopping.
I did tolerate some coffee ice cream once at Cold Stone Creamery, but only b/c DH bought it.
Give me peppermint tea …and some dark chocolate — that’s the way to consume caffeine!

Die-hard coffee drinker here! I don’t know what I’d do without my morning coffee. :) We drink Community Coffee which is made in Louisiana, very good stuff in my opinion. I remember feeling the same way you do, Laura, about it being a cool grown-up drink. My mom let me have some when I was five or six and I couldn’t get it down. In high school, I worked at a bakery and decided I really liked it. It wasn’t until after I got married that I drank it on a regular basis. I drink it with some sweetener and cream.
[Reply]
I love coffee as does my husband. We used to have about four cups of instant coffee a day however when we bought an espresso machine the coffee was so good we only drank two cups a day.
Every morning my husband makes one before he leaves for work, even if he has an early start! My friends )non Christian) cant believe that he loves to do this for me every morning. Then once the kids are in bed, we have another coffee together. We rarely buy coffee out anymore as its never as good as at home and we rarely drink it without each other!

I have never tried it, but I can’t stand the smell. So, no, I am NOT a coffee drinker. Infact, I can’t even go to my homeschools Moms night out at Starbucks, cuz the smell of that place litterally makes me sick to my stomach. I am nausous within 10 minutes. I totally botched my spelling, I know. :)
[Reply]
I actually didn’t start to drink it until the last couple of months. I too love the smell, but the taste was horrible. If I doctor it up I can handle it. I now love the coffee taste, but not the bitterness of it, so I usually drink it with mint, or a mocha.
I turn 37 this month and it took me this long to drink it. But with my little guy getting an ear infection within days of being off an antibiotic, I was a walking zombie. And pop does a number on my stomach. So a small cup of coffee does it for me now.
[Reply]
I thought I was the only one like this. I hate the taste of coffee, but I love the smell. It smells so warm and cozy but I just cant stand the taste. I do however have my cool adult sipping drink that I drink in the mornings in my warm and cozy mug…………..Real Hot Chocolate.
God bless

I love coffee! I used to put sugar and creamer in it, but finally got myself off the sugar. Then switched to skim milk. Then to black altogether. Now, for some reason, I have it into my head to get myself off coffee regularly and drink tea. Caffeinated for now, but hopefully, herbal decaf later. I want coffee to be a treat for me, or for when I really need it (like yesterday, when I was doing taxes for my business!)
[Reply]
I love coffee, too! When I was growing up, my dad drank black coffee several times a day. I loved to take a moment and sniff the aroma from his cup (he enjoyed letting me). We lost my sweet Dad 10 years ago, but the smell of coffee still reminds me of those times with him. I think of my love for coffee as a connection to him.
I take mine with lots of sugar and flavored creamer. But I take a good long whiff before I add anything!
[Reply]
I LOVE coffee! I love everything about it. I can drink seventeen cups a day, and still want another one. I love the smell, especially when the beans are grinding, and I LOVE the taste, either as a latte, or strong, black coffee. I have two sweet little babies who think coffee is something special, and they will try to get a taste of mine if they can. Figures I’d marry a man who can’t stand it… ;)

I’m only a coffee-sniffer too. Love the smell… hate the taste.

I had three kids before I broke down and started to drink coffee at home! I can’t drink it without cream and sugar though. I do have a good hubby. He can’t stand coffee – even the smell – and still he puts up with mine!

I am a tea girl!!! All of my friends drink coffee and they cannot understand how I can’t stand it. It is good to know there are other weirdos out there like me!!!! I love the way it smells! I even have a coffee scented candle! But I hate the taste, even when in a dessert with chocolate!
[Reply]
I LOVE coffee, on occasion. It is not an everyday thing for me, but I do enjoy an occasional cup. I usually drink decaf, since that is what my in-laws and parents drink. My husband is the same as you, though. Loves the smell, hates the drink.
[Reply]
Laura, I’m with you on that one. Love the smell but can not stand the taste in any form. Not even coffee flavored desserts and such. My husband really likes the stuff and even some of my children. My husband lets them have some every now and then with lots of milk, sugar, and flavored creamers. So it really isn’t much coffee. But I can’t even stand it that way. It looks like I am the odd man out here at my house.

I am a lifelong hot tea drinker (with 3 splenda and skim milk), and have just started drinking coffee in the past 11 1/2 months. I joke that I should have named our 11 1/2 month old “Joe” because he turned Mama into a coffee lover! Now I am not completely functioning in the morning without a big mug of strong coffee (4 splenda and skim milk). We were fortunate enough to get to visit Costa Rica in 1998 with my husband’s family. They have seriously good coffee there! For Christmas, I ordered several bags of whole coffee beans from Cafe Britt for my husband. They are almost gone!

I loooooove coffee!!! I’m from Oregon, so coffee is a big deal here. I love it at home with half and half and raw sugar, or I love it at Starbucks. It’s so comforting :) It doesn’t do a thing to keep me awake though, I guess I just like the taste!

I love coffee. We grind our beans fresh and use a french press to make our coffee. I take it with a splash of cream and get my morning off to a good start.

I LOVE COFFEE! I drink mine with a little french vanilla creamer. I tried switching to half and half and agave but couldn’t get used to it. I would like to find a real food version of french vanilla creamer but for now, I will indulge.

I am right there with you! I have tried and tried, even the fancy stuff and still no luck! Our family comes over and makes fun of our 2 cup coffee maker…they say as soon as they walk in the dooer “You better start the coffee now if we are all gonna get a cup!” Joking of course!

I don’t like coffee, any kind of coffee taste or the smell of coffee. But, sometimes I wish I did. Wouldn’t it be fun to say to a friend, “Hey, let’s go get a cup of coffee”.

As a member of the LDS Church, I do not drink coffee. I do love the smell though, especially the coffee aisle at the grocery store.

I don’t like coffee…but I just want it. Weird. I just started wanting it after my third child was born. I think the smell pulled me in, and then I figured it was better than getting my caffeine from Mt. Dew. I just drink it with a splash of milk.
I can’t imagine anyone not loving the smell! Before I started drinking coffee, if we stayed in a hotel I would brew some just to smell it.
[Reply]
I first starting really liking coffee in college. I would mix in my mom’s homemade cocoa mix. And somehow I just starting loving it – I guess for me it was an acquired taste.
I used to drink it every day but when we starting trying to get pregnant I cut out all caffeine. Now that she’s 3 months I have started in again.
I love making it at night and then putting it in the fridge. In the morning I have an iced coffee just waiting for me and I can drink it while holding the baby without fear of burning her. :)

I love the smell of coffee too, but absolutely cannot stand the taste. I never drank much tea either until we moved into an old (cold) farmhouse. Now I have one with my breakfast and my husband makes us each one before we go to bed. I love my tea and can’t imagine how I managed so long without it. :)
[Reply]
never was until I had kids! I love coffee especially with cream and sugar. I do use stevia too. If I don’t drink it right away I add ice and make it an iced coffee. I would love to come over and I will bring a orange cake so good with coffee.

I was raised in a tea-only household, but started drinking coffee when I worked at my dad’s computer training office in high school. It was my job to put out these amazing homemade chocolate chip cookies for the students’ breaks. They were kept in the freezer, but I didn’t have the patience to wait for them to thaw, so I dipped them in coffee.
Now, I’m married to a coffee (preferably espresso) snob…and I like it. Friends gave us a cheap little espresso maker they found at a garage sale a few years back, and we work that puppy! We usually make lattes (I take mine with about 1/2 tsp. sugar), but when any of our European friends are over it’s straight espresso in the cute little cups.
My one requirement is that we buy fair trade coffee whenever possible. Many groceries carry this now, so it’s not hard to do now. I like having my morning coffee and knowing that the family who farmed it is able to live comfortably off of their hard work. This is rarely the case in the coffee industry.

LOVE coffee!!!!!! My dad was a HUGE coffee drinker when I was growing up so I couldn’t wait to turn 12 so I could drink it. In our house, though, you had to drink it black for 4 years until you could have cream and sugar in it :) The first time I brought my husband home to CO he put cream and sugar in his coffee and my Dad teased him about drinking “girl coffee”. DH hasn’t had cream or sugar in his coffee since!

Laura, you should try cuban style coffee with instant coffee. You need to get the Nescafe brand, it truly is the best. Fill a mug with milk, warm the milk in the microwave, stir in one teaspoon of instant coffee and sugar to taste (for me it’s one teaspoon), and enjoy! It’s soooo different from coffee made in a coffee-maker!

It’s A-Okay. It’s only good for you as an enema, anyway. Any other way is unhealthy.

Oh my goodness I didn’t even know there were people out there who didn’t like coffee until I was in college! I grew up drinking it, my parents put it in my bottle (2 tbsp coffee and the rest milk), and I could always have it if I wanted it. I worked at Starbucks and LOVED it, my favorite job of all time, even though I’ve had better paying, easier work with better hours, Starbucks will always be my dream job.
My hubby is from Holland. Big coffee drinkers there. We had our first 50 dates at a diner with bottomless coffees.
We drink it throughout the day, at a minimum two cups in the morning (black and strong), and one or two in the evening after our son is in bed. Sometimes if it’s cold we’ll drink it more often. We make ours with a French Press, which honestly, makes the best coffee.

mcD’s iced mocha’s are made nothing like SB. beware! mcD’s uses tons of hydrogenated oils and sugar.
you could pour tons of store bought creamers into your coffee cause most of them are all oils too.
i look for creamers that are at least coconut oil cause it’s not as bad. but still, if it’s hydrogenated, it’s bad for you. i think SB just uses half&half and good chocolate syrup, giridelli, i think. the fast food iced coffee drinks are soooo yummy and cheap but incredibly bad for you!! stay away, for the love of your arteries!

Well, for the closest you will get at home, try starting with some high quality cocoa mix or shaved milk chocolate. For a “grande” size pour espresso (2 shots = 2 ounces) over your chocolate and let it get melty. Then add your cold milk and ice, stir and top with whipped cream.

Thanks! I’ll try some to find some good cocoa mix, I was trying to use chocolate syrup…not to good.
It is rare to find another who does not like anything coffee-flavored. Even toffee is sometimes too close to coffee for me. I tried to learn to like it when I was in college, but finally had to ask myself why I was torturing myself!

So, yes, I LOVE coffee. I have been drinking it since I was very very young. My family is Italian, so we drank coffee and espresso like water. Coffee is my pick me up in the morning, and at night I love a good Earl Grey or peppermint tea. Mmmmm.

I LOVE coffee!! My grandmother used to tell me that one day I would have to be a grown-up and LEARN to like it. “It’s just what grown-ups do.”, she would say. :)
It was only after my first pregnancy that I began to love it. I could tolerate a latte now and then, but for some reason -my tastes changed after giving birth and now I can NOT go a morning without it. It’s a great soothing drink that is allows me to ease into my morning. Yummmmmmmmy!!

however, if I have even 1 cup of coffee, I will be up half the night, tired but wide-eyed. Can you tell I had coffee today? :)
