Coffee Smell vs. Coffee Taste – Question #58

By Laura · Feb,05 2010

Coffee.

LOVE the way it smells.  Really, REALLY don’t like the way it tastes.

When I was little, I thought that drinking coffee was part of being a cool grown up.  I loved the way coffee drinkers held their mugs.  I loved the way coffee drinkers happily sipped their steaming drink.

And I LOVED the smell of coffee brewing each morning.

It just smelled so…cozy and comfortable.

I figured that when I was older and allowed to drink coffee, I would just love it!  I thought that I’d be able to sit there with the grown-ups and look cool while I sipped my coffee too.

And then I tried some.

YUCK!  Seriously?  THIS is what coffee tastes like?

I was in shock.  That is not the taste I expected to go along with the great smell and the cool coffee sipping.

Later I gave it another try…this time with cream and sugar.  Lots and lots of sugar.

Nope…nothing could mask that taste for me.

To this day, I just can’t drink coffee.  I can’t even eat a coffee flavored jelly bean.

Oh, but I still love the way it smells.

Matt doesn’t like coffee either, so I LOVE it when we have house guests who like to drink it.  We have a tiny little coffeepot.  When we have overnight guests, with hope and a gleam in my eye I always ask them  if they’d like me to make coffee for them in the morning.  I LOVE it when they say yes because when I make it I get to smell it brewing!!  Mmmm!

So…are you a coffee drinker?  How do you take your coffee?

If you are a coffee drinker, will you PLEASE come over some time so I can brew coffee for you?!  Please?

I love hot coca, hot apple cidar with brown sugar and butter. It’s just great that way. I also love my coffee cold, with lots of sugar and a good flavored creamer, with whipped cream out of the can and a little sprinkles. Now thats a real treat.

Oh yes, we have to have coffee in the morning! Hubby and I like to make some decaf in the evening after the kids are in bed…and maybe have some of your applesauce bread to go with it. :) Hubby drinks his black, I take mine with a little sugar and cream…sometimes I just sprinkle cinnamon on top…yum!!

My dad is the same way. Loves the smell, hates the taste! However, because he’s heard that your taste buds change every seven years, he tried coffee at least once a year to see if he likes it yet. Hilarious; and the answer is also, nope, not yet.

Ever since I was little, I have loved coffee! I would drink it at any opportunity I had. When I made it to highschool, could drive, and found friends who also liked coffee as much as I did, we spent a lot of time at the local coffee shop.
Now, my husband and I are the proud owners of a coffee house/ cafe/ coffee bean “roastery” (not sure if that’s the technical word, think like bakery – Haha). My husband actually comes home with that wonderful aroma in his hair everyday! We get to try a huge variety of coffees on a regular basis and I have found that there are some coffees that I LOVE and some that I very strongly dislike. I’m a believer that everyone likes coffee, they just haven’t foudn their perfect brew yet (haha). :)

I LOVE COFFEE!!! And yes, I am shouting! Love how it smells! I used to love it super sweet and with a LOT of cream/milk, whatever was available. However, in the last few months, I can’t stand cream in it anymore and I barely put any sweetener/sugar in it. I’ve come to love the bitter taste and I don’t know why! I love the warmth of it, and yes, it is cool! I’ll be over to have a cup and some great conversation!!

I really enjoy a nice cup of black coffee – once in a while. The caffeine (or maybe something else in it) really messes with me. But I will tell you something – I don’t really like Colombian coffee which is the norm in the US. If you ever have a chance to drink a FRESHLY brewed dark Jamaican blend or a light and nutty Brazilian blend, you might have a totally different opinion of coffee! I have to admit as much as I like my coffee black, I do enjoy a carmel-frappicino-coffee-like-drink every once in a while. :-)

Wow, Catherine…you have quite the palate! My favorite is an Ethiopian that we roast in store. It has is a lighter roast with a naturally sweeter taste, MMMM.

I can be quite the coffee-snob! But I always consider it a special treat and I don’t even own a coffee maker.

I actually weaned myself off it last summer. I was just tired of being so addicted – if I went without coffee one morning I got a terrible headache and couldn’t do anything. So, when I had an upset stomach and couldn’t have coffee for two days, and then had a week off from work, I figured ‘This is the best opportunity I’ll ever get to quit.’ I had a four day headache, but I really am glad I quit.

I love the way it smells too. Mmm. I wander down the coffee aisle at the grocery store (where the fresh beans are) and just inhale deeply. I LOVE it. I enjoy a flavored and sweetened latte now and then for a treat, but we don’t even own a coffee maker because my husband just doesn’t like it, and I am mostly indifferent. I have had good coffee though. A good quality bean, flavored, and brewed gently, and I can drink it black (or brown, actually).

Since for the past two years I have been pregnant or nursing, I have mostly stayed away from anything caffinated. It’s one less addiction I have to worry about that way anyway. *Ahem* CHOCOLATE! *Ahem*
