Question #40
ByI’m the kind of girl who just really doesn’t get a tan in the summer. I mean…I get a little bit darker than my normal pale self…but that’s it. And…any tan that I happen to get is very “farmer tan”. Ah, but I’m proud of my very barely farmer tan.
My brother on the other hand just has to look at a picture of sunshine and he turns bronze. It’s crazy. Somehow…he got all the pigment in our family and there was none left by the time I came along.
To tan or not to tan…that is the question. Are you the kind of person who tans easily…or do you burn after you’ve been in the sun for five minutes? Are you a lovely shade of brown by this time of the summer…or are you just, well…not any shade of brown, like me?

I’m a barely tanned. I look at it this way though, I won’t get skin cancer. I get teased that my kids are the same way, but hey, I’d like them not to get cancer either. I wish I tanned, but I hate sun, so sit in the shade and watch them play. But I should probally work on a little tan before I make a glare in my brother’s wedding photos in September. :)

I tan extremely slowly. Since I don’t like heat — or sun — I don’t get much of a tan each summer. This summer has been a little cooler here, so I’ve been outside a little more. That means I’m a little browner… just enough to take the glare off of me on a bright day. :) My daughter always gets sprayed down thoroughly every time we’re going to be out for more than 5 minutes. She tans easily like her daddy, so she’s a little browner than me. But we’re happy being skin cancer-free too.

I burn very easily. As you might guess, I am extremely fair-skinned so success for me is more of a rosy look by the end of the summer. Even when I don’t burn, I don’t ever turn brown, just a bit rosy. Looks a bit better than all white, I guess!
I was out for an hour and half this morning picking blueberries and forgot sunscreen or hat. I am totally paying for it! Ouch!

My ancestors were Anglo Saxon and Scottish. I have reddish-brown hair. I have gray eyes. I have no melanin. I have come to grips with that. Give me that 85 spf sunscreen to slather on by the gallon.
Oh, I stupidly tried to tan when I was in my teens and early 20′s. Went to a tanning salon (do they still have those?) and worked up to about 10 minutes. Then I changed salons and the lady thought that their beds weren’t as “hot” as they should be and decided to leave me in there about 18 minutes. Just enough to roast my buns, if you know what I mean! I worked as a secretary at the time. A lot of sitting.
And let’s not even talk about those self-tanning products!

I will never ever get tan. When I was little I got tan- but now- no way- I am either a tomato or a white ghost. = ) Well, maybe a little tanner than in the dead of winter- but not too much.

I tan easily, but it’s not something I do for the fun of it. I am “allergic” to UV rays and get a rash as soon as the weather’s warm enough for me to be out in short sleeves. A nice layer of tan helps protect my skin so I don’t have to deal with that all summer long. In the beginning of the summer, if I’m out in the sun for a long time (before my protective tan) I use sunscreen a lot, but after that I don’t usually bother. I like a little Vitamin D to soak in:)

I absolutely do NOT tan, but I burn quite well. I’ve got very fair skin and freckles.

I tan so easily. 5 minutes in the sun and I am one tan girl. I don’t go out to the sun for this just my latin background. My hubby likes it so that’s good. I even wear sunblock everyday…go figure.

You know Laura, here is Australia (aka the Skin Cancer Capital of the World) we are taught that a tan is actually a sign that your skin is in crisis. Every tan and every burn can contribute to skin cancer, which is a vicious disease. So don’t try to tan. Stay out of the sun between the hours of 11am and 2pm – and when you do go out cover up in the sun and use sunscreen liberally or as we say “SLIP – SLOP – SLAP – WRAP!”
SLIP on a shirt
SLOP on some sunscreen
SLAP on a hat
WRAP around some sun glasses.

Amen!
I’m opposed to tanning more than ever now. My sister was recently diagnosed w/skin cancer, all clear now. After surgery, reconstruction of her belly button. And she will have to see an oncologist every 6 months for life.
I’m one to burn after 5 mins in the sun. So my family and I are slathered up in sunblock, and t-shirts that block out the harmful rays as much as possible.

I tan a little. One year, as a lifeguard, I turned a nice golden color. Now I just freckle. Everywhere. I don’t mind the freckles – I’m the only one in the family who got this trait from my grandmother – it’s my little connection with her (she passed nearly 20 years ago).

lol…it would be nice to just look at a picture of the sun and turn bronze…however all I do is turn bright red! :-)

We moved to Las Vegas from Michigan 5 years ago. It is almost impossible for me NOT to tan here whereas it was almost impossible to GET tan there. Even riding in the car, my arms get sun just from the windows! But we’re also much more aware of putting on sunblock. We know so many people here who have gotten skin cancer simply from being in such strong sun for years and years. So we actually do our best NOT to get tan! :-)

I just freckle. Our winters are so long that when the sun does come our way I crave sunshine on my skin – even just for 20-30 minutes/day. For this time I do not use sunscreen… NEED VITAMIN D :) Apart from that I use SPF 50 and don’t spend much time in the sun.

those pictures that have phantoms in it (you know, some fluorecent spot of pale white), well, the phantom is me!

I don’t tan either. My husband does though a lot so we look funny together in the summer. :) It doesn’t bother me. A long time ago I came to terms with the fact that I will always be the same pale colour on my entire body – no farmer’s tan even.

When we are in Mexico, everyone is sure that it is always our first day there since we wear so much sunscreen and don’t burn as a result. Red hair, freckles and made this way so that everyone else looks tan, lol. Do have to admit the small farmer tan though too, just my arms though.

I live in Florida and have a little tan, but don’t look anything like most “sun-kissed” people. I don’t go lay out. Any tan I have is from attending my son’s golf tournaments and being on the boat (where I actually stay under the shade as much as possible).
[Reply]
No tanning…just more and more freckles that eventually “join” together so I look like I’ve got a tan!

I don’t tan, I just get sun-poisoning or burn. I’ve just learned to live with being incredibly pale. I don’t even try to color up with make-up any more. I’ve accepted my very white self for who God made me.

Some summers, my freckles merge and I LOOK tanned.

I tan, and enjoy the great vitamin D that I get from the sun! It actually prevents cancer. ( although it is never good to burn ) Check out a website called http://www.mercola.com He has lots of things to say about sun exposure and vitamin D.
I am very olive skin toned, and as a child I could spend a lot of time in the sun and never burn, as I get a little older, It takes a while before I am dark. Usually by the end of the summer I am very tan.

I end up red when I go out. My Brother and sister tan. I wear alot of sunblock.

I’m part native American and live in Arizona so I tan pretty well. I try to stay out of the sun and usually have a 50 SPF and before my girls go to school they get the sunscreen otherwise they have farmer tans from being on the play ground.

I burn easily and have never had a tan in my life (unless it came out of a bottle). Probably one of the reasons I like indoor activities rather than outdoor ones.
