Question #38

By Laura · Jun,26 2009

I used to be a pretty picky eater.  I didn’t really like to try new things…and certainly not new vegetables.  I would usually say, “Oh, I don’t like that!”…even though I’d NEVER tried it.

I’m really thankful that I finally grew out of that and started trying new things!  Who knew broccoli and asparagus and okra would be so good?  (Oh, and I just bought a kohlrabi at the Farmer’s Market last night to try!)

That being said…for some reason…I just really still don’t like bananas.  Silly, isn’t it?  Of all things not to like.  I can get one down about once a year if I must.  I like banana bread, banana pancakes, banana muffins and banana cake…but I am just not a fan of eating a big ol’ banana.

Maybe some day I’ll get over it.  For now, I’m opting out of banana eating.

So, how about you?  What are some foods you just don’t really like?  (I mean…of the ones you’ve actually tried.)

I hate, totally HATE coconut. I can’t even get it down. Even smelling it makes me feel itchy. lol

Cat fish. I have tried to eat it a few times but it always tastes like dirt to me. I’m told I just haven’t had the right kind of cat fish. I think I will just pass on it.

  3. That would be brinjal or eggplant! I absolutely dislike it in any form. Must have been bad childhood memories of being forced to eat it!

  4. I am embarassingly picky. Don’t like seafood of any kind, though I haven’t particularly tried much, I just can’t get past the smell.

I like banana, but sometimes I get about 2/3 of the way through one and the texture gets to me.

Kohlrabi, sprinkled with salt – delicious. :>)

  5. I honestly don’t like raw tomatoes. I WANT to like them. Really! I also don’t like olives or blue cheese except paired with fruit.

I don’t like seafood, except for shrimp that’s been battered and fried. I grew up in San Francisco and the smell at Fisherman’s Wharf was so strong and nasty! ;( I also don’t like certain things because of the texture, like tapioca pudding.

But–I will say that chocolate is divine on lots of things and at any time of the day.:)

fresh tomatoes – I try every year – I long to love them as everyone else seems to. especially in the summer time when they are so pretty and red and juicy. they look yummy until I put them in my mouth and then yep, they’re still a tomato…

I can eat them cooked or in salsa all day though.

My votes go with coconut and cooked cabbage. Maybe it’s just an aversion to foods that start with the letter c? I can’t do the texture and flavor on both of these. I will eat cabbage as coleslaw or in an egg roll. But that’s it! The coconut just ruins anything it’s in. My dislike of coconut comes in handy when my co-workers make desserts. It gives me an excuse (and motivation) to not eat them!

  9. Laura says:

Cottage cheese. There is no food in the world grosser than cottage cheese.

Sardines might be a close second.

I second Laura on sardines! I also can’t stomach eggplant. Ewwww.

Love bananas though! And young coconut — can’t get enough of that. :)

I use to HATE veggies. I would only eat green beans & sometimes lettuce but only in a salad (that is actually still the same) & with tons of dressing. About a year ago I started living a healthier life & started trying veggies cooked differently than I had had them growing up (ie, boiled or fried). My absolute favorite is baked zucchini & yellow squash. So good.

I’m with you on the bananas. My mom said that was one of the only things she could get me to eat as a kid & now even the smell of them makes my stomach turn. I even got sick once on a banana flavored Skittle. How ridiculous is that? I really wish I liked them. They are very handy, versatile, & look delicious, but I just can’t do it.

I also don’t like broccoli. I’m not a huge fan of carrots but I’m learning to incorporate them into some of my dishes & I can’t really taste them like that. Same with cabbage. I don’t like asparagus either but I had it grilled/roasted over a camp fire while camping a few months ago & it wasn’t disgusting. Maybe I should try that again. I’m not a huge fan of tomatoes either (except in sauces or ketchup) but I’m working on that one.

First — I love your new layout!

hmmmm…. I like most all foods, but I would have to say having a nut allergy makes me really dislike nuts! As far as foods I can eat but choose not to — I’m not a big sea food fan.

    Yeah. Enough said.

I am sitting here eating scrambled eggs as I read this — I am almost 49yo and have only been eating eggs for about 6 months. I just kept trying them every so often until one day they didn’t make me gag! I still don’t like “angeled eggs” but I will keep trying them, as well.

I have to agree with some of the other commenters … catfish (I have a personal rule about eating anything with whiskers), olives (tried again just recently – still make me gag), and cottage cheese top my list.

Cheeseslave says that we have to “train our palates” so I keep trying small bites of things every so often and have actually learned to like quite a few things that I didn’t eat even a year ago … cabbage, collard and turnip greens, turnips, and kale to name a few. It helps to have a CSA order that comes every week and you don’t want to waste anything.

I’ll eat almost anything, but brussels sprouts smell like dirty socks cooking. If they are slathered with butter and salt, I can eat them, but I never cook them for my family. Cucumbers are nondescript. They taste like watermelon rind. They are non-offensive, but aside from eating them raw and making pickles out of them, they are a waste of garden space. Now that I live in Texas, it’s hard to avoid the ubiquitous jalapeno pepper. This is a food?????? I wonder if it would unplug the bathroom drain?

  16. Ezzy says:

Peas and Bell peppers. I am not a fan of peas, but my room mates love’em
Bell Peppers- I am intolerant of them so they are a no go.
I like most everything else i have tryed

Hm, really most any veggie cooked I don’t care for, but I’ll eat most of them raw. Cooked carrots are soooo nasty but fresh and crunchy, mmmmm. Same with broccoli, though I’ve found that when it’s steamed right and covered in butter it isn’t so bad, lol. I adore salads in most forms but cooked veggies…yah….ick. Oh, and about the jalapeno peppers (I’m in Texas too) I don’t know if they’d unclog a drain, lol, I’ll have to try it. They really are all over the place because they grow so well here.

coconut and coffee. Ok, coffee isn’t a food and I never even actually tried it. But I can’t get past the smell!

I’m with Elaine! I have always hated eggs in any form besides hard boiled (and I’m 26). Then for some reason I started to like them a few months ago. Just goes to show that if you keep trying something, you may eventually like it! I also used to hate bananas, but I like them now. Keep trying those bananas…you may like them someday. :)

I can’t stand artichokes. They’re just yucky. Good thing they’re not a mainstream veggie.

  20. Josette says:

I agree I don’t like catfish, but then I don’t like to eat any bottom feeders.

I hate cilantro…it itches the top of my mouth and I hate the smell.

I eat coconut oil and the milk but can’t stand shredded coconut (go figure).

  21. Jessica says:

Beets…they taste like dirt no matter how I cook them or how I clean them.

Roasted red peppers…one morning when I was growing up my mom roasted red peppers in the oven to make a dip for a get-together we were having. I woke up to the AWFUL smell and felt sick to my stomach the entire day following! I still cannot tolerate it/them!

  22. Julie says:

A hard-boiled egg “as is”. I can eat them in potato salad, egg salad, on top of salad, but not by themselves.

I used to absolutely hate raw tomatoes….until I was pregnant with my firstborn. I couldn’t get enough and I still have a taste for them…yay, because we have plenty in the garden to consume. :)

  23. Catherine says:

I cannot like brussel sprouts no matter how much I try. My husband loves them, but poor man is lucky to get them more than a few times a year. I hate them so much I just don’t think to buy them!

And prawns. Here in Australia prawns are so famous for being celebration food. I can eat one very small one, but after that they are just nauseating.

I loathe olives, turnip and mustard greens. I try olives and the greens every so often but as of yet it’s still a no go.

I am truly not a picky eater and will try anything once.

Have not found a veggie yet I don’t like, but mine has got to be pickled herring. On the table every Christmas, no can do. Hubby loves it, and I have enjoyed every other form of seafood I have tried, except maybe eel, that was a tough one. I love all meats with the exception of rocky mountain oysters, but can you blame a girl for that one?

  26. Susan says:

I’d have to say Brussel Sprouts. I’ve only tried them once, but I remember it well!
The only “mainstream” food I can think of that I find genuinely disgusting is pork. Pork chops in particular. And most kinds of ham. My poor husband loves the stuff. I really do try to cook it for him, but yak! Of course, my hubby won’t eat most veggies, fruits, or any fish. Or soups or chili or oats or any hot cereal or most “normal” foods- like grilled cheese sandwiches. Or cold cuts (not that I would encourage that one anyway).

Ok~ I don’t feel as silly now. I HATE bananas!!! They are so gross that if I eat one I gag the whole time! To make matters worse my kiddos LOVE them and eat at least one every day! What am I going to do if they ever ask why I don’t eat them? I have been putting half of a banana in my smoothie to try and get myself used to it. Still no luck, I can drink the smoothie but if the banana taste comes through too much I have to choke it down. On the flip side though I am addicted to broccoli and eat it for breakfast on a regular basis :)

I’m a pretty good eater, always have been. That said, I can’t stand firm tofu at all — yuck! I will put silken in a smoothie, but if I can see the cubes of tofu, I won’t eat it.

I’m also not a fan of anything raw that should be cooked (IMO, of course ;)). No organ meats, brains, tripe or other aliens — bleck!

  29. HI,
I’m new to reading your blog but just had to tell you what food I just recently found that I DON’T like–that is beets! Icky! I think they taste and smell like dirt! I eat WAY more veggies than I used to and haven’t found many things I don’t like–until beets:)

  30. Danielle says:

Well, I never tried these, but I will NEVER eat them. Bison, mutton, lamb, venison, rabbit, or organ meat.

I can’t eat raw carrots, I tried one time and actually got sick. And I can’t eat raw onions, or any onions besides Vidalia, horrible indigestion! same w/peppers!

Step, tofu usually takes on the flavor of whatever you are cooking it w/. Tofu by itself is just nasty lol. But I LOVE it in Chinese food! I can see the chunks of it, but it has the flavors of the sauces in the food.

I’m with you on bananas. I can’t think of anything else I don’t like, or won’t at least try, but a plain ol’ banana – no way! I used to be able to tolerate them if they were cut in penny slices, but now I can’t even eat them that way. I do, however, love all things cooked with bananas – so, I’m pretty sure it’s just something with the texture of the raw banana. Go figure. It is nice to know it’s not “just me” though! By the way, my 8yo ds will eat EVERY fruit except banana and kiwi – and my 5yo ds will ONLY eat bananas! They DO keep life interesting!

Oh my word, I am so picky! I dislike hot dogs, but I’ll eat them if I have to, I don’t really like eggs, unless they are mixed with other things. This is weird, I don’t really like bread. I’ll usually just eat the filling in my sandwich and give the bread to my husband. I really don’t care for bananas, and the taste of mayonnaise, walnuts, or toffee makes me gag.

That being said, I have never met a vegetable I didn’t like, and ice cream is always a winner in my book!

  34. Avon says:

My fav way to eat bananas is to take a jar of crunchy (real) peanut butter and a butterknife… peel the banana skin back just a little way… spread on some of the peanut butter, eat… then repeat the process. (Apples are also good this way. Just slice or wedge and spread w pb and eat.) Bananas are so full of hard-to-get minerals. Try them sliced on waffles or pancakes and pour on your syrup or honey(sprinkle w walnuts – mmmm). Mix small chunks in with strawberries. One thing… you may be eating them too green. They are slimier then. Be sure they have a few freckles… that means the sugar has released and they won’t be so slimy.

What did you do with the kohlrabi? I have been trying lots of new things as its our first year in a CSA. I just blogged about it: http://onelittlewordsheknew.blogspot.com/2009/06/csa-veggies.html

  36. Audra says:

Boy – those other comments really got me thinking! Textures are my biggest problem. Banana definitely gets to me. I can eat it if it is sliced super thin and swimming in a bowl of milk. Don’t ask me why! I absolutely HATE lamb and veal – even if I try it without knowing that it is a baby animal! I also long to love fresh tomatoes but, once again, texture wins. I love them cooked pretty much any way though.
