Question #31

By Laura · Apr,17 2009

I giggle everytime I think about this, so I thought I’d really better share it with you.

When we first got married, we lived in an apartment in someone’s basement.  It had a little kitchen with a tiny gas stove.  I had never cooked on a gas stove before and I soon learned to really enjoy it.

One day a friend of mine came over and walked into my kitchen.  And she said,

“Oh!!  Do you have gas?!”

I jumped a bit from the shock of her question because of course, I had no idea she was asking about my stove.  I really thought that she was randomly asking me if I had gas.

 You know…gas

What in the world would make her ask such a thing?  Had my stomach just gurgled?  Had my shoe made an unbecoming sound on the floor?

Completely oblivious to my distress, my friend went on to talk about how she just loved it when she used to have gas, but she didn’t have gas anymore and oh how she missed it.  How lucky of me to have gas.  And, maybe someday, she too would have gas.

Uuuuhhhhhhmmmmmm.

I don’t know how long it took for me to understand that she was talking about the fact that her stove was electric and my stove was gas.  Sometimes I’m not that bright. (Possibly an effect from having gas.)

She and I had a huge laugh over that one…and I seriously still giggle about it (14 years later) whenever I think about it.

So, I’ve just gotta ask.

Do you have gas?  Or do you have electric?

I know some people LOVE their gas stoves and feel that they are must-haves in their homes.  I currently have an electric ceramic top since that was in the house when we moved here.  I don’t really have a preference.  I could take gas or leave it.  :)

How exciting for those of you who have gas.  You get to leave a comment saying,

“Hello.  My name is ___________.  I have gas.”

Those of us with electric just won’t have as much fun with this one.  Ah but some day.  Someday, we too might have gas.

I’ve always had gas- my mom prefers it, so that’s what I grew up with. In both of our homes so far, we’ve had a gas stove, too. I guess I’m just so used to looking at the flame, cooking on electric is odd to me. With a flame you can easily adjust the heat. I suppose I’d get used to electric if we ever have to have one, but it wouldn’t be my preference! :)

  5. Lenetta says:

Electric. My mom has electric. I had gas a few times (insert eye roll here) and never felt like I could really cook well on it. I couldn’t get the flame low enough on low. I’m with Amy, though, it’s a bummer when the power goes out. Now I just need to keep leaning on hubs to get me a wind turbine when we live on the farm and I’d be SET.

Hello. My name is Cynthia. I have gas.
Very funny post! I have used both electric and gas stoves, switching back and forth a few times. I don’t know that I have a preference, but I did have to re-learn each time I changed.

  8. Quinn says:

I have electric with coils, and when I was house shopping, gas was a deterrent. I’m not a fan of glass cooktops either. I’m far too messy of a cook, and I hated cleaning the glass when I still lived with my parents.

I never liked using gas because I find it to be too inconsistent. When I wanted to simmer a spaghetti sauce or a soup all day on low, I always had to keep checking the flame because it would just blow out.

I agree with Alyssa, I think it has a lot to do with what you grew up with and are used to.

I didn’t grow up on gas stoves, so it was a whole new experience for me when we moved to an apartment equipped with gas stoves. But I’ve grown to completely love them, and I hope I never have to go back to electric!

I only wish my current apartment’s stove wasn’t so ancient. The knob design is terrible and it has lead to some serious gas leakage. And I often have issues with the inconsistent level of flames for the position of the knob. I think a newer model would correct that. Anyway. Tangent….

Love the story. No wonder you giggle over it so much!

  12. Melody Joy says:

I grew up cooking on a gas stove (with my mom, of course) and I absolutely love it. I like how much more control you have over the heat, the fact that you don’t have to wonder how long it will take for the burner to get hot, etc. My first apartment post college had a gas stove, too. There is nothing better!

Now, my husband and I have a tiny apartment, with a (very) small electric stove. I am getting more used to it now, having cooked on this particular stove for 9 months now. But it was tough at first, because every electric stove is different, or so it would seem. My first electric oven was like 20 degrees low, and this one is around 20 degrees high. However, the huge blessing in our electric stove is that we live in GA, and gas is very expensive in GA.

  17. I used to have gas, but now I’m electrified! LOL I miss having gas, things just seemed to cook better and faster on lower temps!! And on the older (Non-electric ignition??, you know the old fashioned pilot light that was always on??) gas stoves the oven was always warm so you could just stick your wet cookie sheets in there to dry so they didn’t rust :)

Hello, my name is Jamie. I have gas!

I grew up cooking on an electric stove, but my husband grew up with gas (!)
When we bought our first home a few years ago it had an electric stove, but we knew it would only last a few more years, at most, so we waited for the day when it stopped working.

We ended up choosing a stove with a gas cooktop and electric ovens. It was expensive to get it installed (twice the price) but, now that I am getting used to it, I really do like cooking with gas(!)

I used to have gas and loved it. In my new house I have induction hot plates. They are electric but you can control the heat similar to a gas hot plate. You need to use a saucepan that conducts the heat so that whatever is inside the saucepan heats. Consequently if you touch the plate itself, it cannot burn you.

    LOL TOO fun.

I *had* gas, but I don’t have it any more. Prior to our move to California I didn’t have gas at any point in my life. Honestly I didn’t know what to do about having gas. It was handy when the power went out at length January 2008, but that was about it. I never could cook right while I had gas.

bwahaha Oh I can see why you and your friend laugh about it still.

My name is Emily, and I have gas! And I absolutely loooove it! :-) We had it in our first apartment and have it in the new one, too, although this one has an electric pilot light unlike the last one, and that is more convenient.

One time at our old apartment, my dad, unknowingly, put a plastic tupperware lid on the stove (they have electric so he didn’t think a thing of it) and melted a hole in it! Gas certainly has its quirks, but it is wonderful!

Then we moved into our current house in which they left us their gas stove. Can I say LOVE?

I grew up on electric, and when we got married, our first apartment was gas. I LOVED IT. It was so much easier than electric. It does have a learning curve if you are switching, but I just really enjoy the speed of cooking on it.

Oh, do I need to mention the fact that before I started cooking on it, I was terrified I was going to blow up? :D

Hi, I’m Sonja, and I have gas! That is so going to me by next cooking club introduction! What a good laugh for the middle of the day. Actually, I am spoiled. I have a dual fuel range that is gas on the top and not one but two electric ovens on the bottom, all in the space of a range. The top one has only one rack, but heats up in about 3 minutes, perfect for pizza or toast. The bottom one has three racks and is still large enough to cook a full sized turkey plus sides as one of the shelves can split in half to make more height room. It was the only thing I asked for when we built, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Well, in that area anyway…

  45. Jen says:

I grew up in a house with gas, never cared that there was something else until I moved out on my own to an apartment with an electric range top. An aged electric stove coupled with my battered second-hand steel cookware created some “interesting” and sometimes barely edible meals. After a few years, I learned to cook on an electric range, even on a glass-top for a year. But when I moved again just 18 months ago, I was SO elated to see a gas stove again! Food never tasted so good as when not burnt on touchy unkind electric coils.

I know that some seasoned cooks don’t have trouble going between electric and gas. But for me it didn’t work out so well. My fiance and I are looking to move again this summer. Among the top three things we are looking for: 4 bedrooms, backyard, & gas range. I could even give up the big backyard if we are within walking distance of a good park, but I cannot give on the gas stove.

I grew up with electric, but now I have gas. I like it… but I still miss the flat-top electric stove at my parents’ place. I liked the ease of cleaning up. The other thing I don’t like about gas is that it heats up our apartment. I don’t remember electric doing that.

So when we built our house… I did dual fuel and have GAS on top and Electric for baking…

I have gas…and it is troublesome to me. We just moved to a new house and before this, I used electric. With gas, I’m constantly burning things. I’ve learned to keep it no higher than medium heat, but I don’t like the way the flame heats in a particular circle. With electric the whole pan could get evenly hot. And then I’m always paranoid my daughter will turn the knob and leak gas into the house and we will explode in a big ball of gas…
