Question #23

By Laura · Dec,06 2008

So, let’s talk about our Christmas plans.

I’m from Kansas and Matt is from California.  We take turns going to Kansas one year and then California the next.  THIS is our California year.

Pretty much all of Matt’s family lives somewhere in California, either in the Fresno and Visalia area or in LA.  We’re the Coppinger odd-balls who chose to live in Nebraska.  So,  we all look forward to being together at Christmas time every other year.

We usually fly…but the price of tickets is CRAZY for six people.  This year we’re driving.  And yay!  The price of gas has gone down.  Plus, since we are the only ones who need to travel a significant distance, many people pitch in on our travel expenses.   Very nice.

We’ll be heading out in a few weeks for a long, long, long drive.  I’m not looking forward to the drive, but I AM looking forward to seeing our family.  I really, really like my in-laws.  How ’bout that?

So, those are the plans we’re working on for Christmas.

What are all of you doing for Christmas?  Have any BIG plans? (or medium or small ones?)

We’re doing the same thing but going the opposite way of your family – heading to the East coast to see my family and most of dh’s family and a few friends along the way, too. :D

We are staying HOME! I’ve already done enough traveling for the next few years! :) My mom and grandparents might be in town, if not it will just be our little family.

  4. This is the first and hopefully LAST year we will ever do this, but we have a six-week-old baby, first grandchild on both sides, and everyone wants to see her of course. So we are driving from Nashville to Philadelphia and staying for a few days…then we are driving from Philly to Dayton, Ohio to see all my extended family VIA Pittsburgh to see my DH’s extended family.

    We’ve lost our minds.

We have lots of plans over Christmas. Our first grandchild was born on Nov. 12 so this is going to be a very exciting Christmas! Christmas day we are going to Kearney, NE to spend the day with my husband’s family. Then the following weekend my family is coming here to Kansas from Oklahoma. My favorite part of Christmas is spending time with family.

My husband is Australian, I grew up in Florida and we currently live in Colorado (military)….. This year, my husband’s dad and step-mom are coming over from Australia and will stay with us the week of Christmas and then go visit some friends for their remaining time in the US!!!

Karen, you’ll be just north of me! :>) We’re staying here for Christmas to celebrate with hubs’s family (I really can’t throw a rock without hitting most of them) and then we’ll go to my parents after Christmas for a few days while my brother and his family is there.

Sounds like fun! I love the drive. We’ve driven between Minnesota and Fresno a few times and I just love it :) But, if you’re taking the Colorado route, be careful through the pass! I can only imagine what Vail’s like right now. Be safe! —- This is our first Christmas in Minnesota (my home area) since 2000. I am so excited because it’s my first time hosting the holiday celebration :)

Since Hubby’s family moved here (KS) from CA this year we will all be together for the first time. This will be the first Christmas in 9 yrs our children have had family around and the first Christmas that they will remember family being around. They were too young when we lived on the east coast near my family to remember.

Megan and I are driving home to MO for a week and a couple days… Let me know if/when you’re going to be coming through Colorado!

  12. We live within a twenty minute drive of both of our parents and our married brothers. It’s strange having “extended family” close by in Alaska. BUT my parents have decided to fly down to Ohio with my younger brothers to spend a Christmas with Grandma and Papaw (the way I used to every year as a child). Also, my older brother will be with his new in-laws. SO James and I will be completely free to spend ALL of our time with his family. I am a tiny bit stressed about this possibility, but I am hoping that we can bless my in-laws with this special time. At least it’s really nice to not have to split the holiday in half–and then who gets which half? Oy!

I’m such a grinch–as soon as we got pregnant (the first time), there was a new Commandment “Thou shalt not travel in November or December.” We are having a great time making our own family traditions–none of which involve the airport.

More power to those who choose to travel–just make sure you are doing because you want to, not out of guilt.

Hey we live about an hour and half north of Fresno! My dad grew up there and we still have family in the area. Funny, such a small world. Since we just got back from Idaho for Thanksgiving, we will be staying local for Christmas. Christmas Eve here w/ my in laws, and Christmas day w/ my side at my parents just a couple miles away. Simple and easy. Enjoy the drive! I can imagine it is a tough one with four energetic boys! It was about 12 hours for us to make it to Boise. I have three kids 5 and under. The baby (7 months) had it the hardest. She wanted to be held and didn’t like being told no!! LOL! Merry Christmas!

Our big plans are traveling… I hate living away from family; it is so hard not to see them very often!!
I am not even bothering with a tree at home this year… too much work, However, Christmas cookies will still be happening

That is so nice that family chips in on travel expenses!
Most of the month of Dec ends up being Christmas for us. This year, everything seems to be at the end of the month. We get together with my whole family on the 20th, with MIL on the 21st. Then with my parents and sisters on the 24th. Our little family Christmas on the 25th. And finally Christmas with FIL on the 27th.
I really love having it all spread out like that and enjoy doing the traveling. :)

Yup, we’re doing the opposite of you guys and we’re going East to visit my family. It would be nice to drive… probably cheaper… but we can’t take that much time off vacation, so we’re flying. Sigh. Expensive! But we didn’t fly anywhere for Thanksgiving, so I guess we’re fine.

We are in the middle of remodeling our house, so I don’t even get to decorate for Christmas this year. Very sad. :( I love to decorate for Christmas! I have TONS of decorations that go in every corner of my house, even the bathroom.

All of our family lives nearby, so we don’t have to do any traveling. YAY! I wouldn’t want to travel at Christmas.

Hope you have a wonderful time visiting the in-laws!

We are in a new home this Christmas with a pool, a beautiful view of the river and plenty of space for the family. Consequently its all my family on Christmas day and hubby’s family on Boxing Day. Luckily we have great weather for outdoors and will be using the BBQ to its full potential.

We moved from northern CA to Boise a couple years ago, and both our families are still in CA. So we’re traveling this year, too– riding the train! I haven’t done the train in years, and we’re really looking forward to it. 13 hours of no phones, no laundry, nothing to do but chat, read, enjoy the scenery, and try to sleep!

It’s just the two of us… kids would definitely make this a different kind of trip.

My husband is from California and I’m from Arkansas….and we live in Virginia. We alternate holidays with our parents as well….we drive to visit my family (1300 miles one way), and with three small kids, we’re not flying anymore so his parents have to come to us. They were just here for Thanksgiving, and we’re driving to Tennesse to see my sister and Arkansas to see the rest of my family in a couple of weeks. The drive isn’t much fun, but I can’t wait to see my family! And thank goodness the gas prices are down….cuts the price of our trip in half!
