If you’ve been wondering if I really was going to plant a garden this year like I said I was, I’d have to say, “You and me both.” Never has the weather been so uncooperative with our schedules like this year. I really was beginning to wonder if we’d have any kind of garden at all since it’s been so cool and rainy this spring, making it very difficult to get anything into the ground. Finally we have now had the chance to get most of our garden planted.
We skipped the potatoes this year – I know…sad! We just didn’t get to it in time. We used our extra garden space to instead plant a few more rows of corn. And, as normal, we have lots of green beans, tomatoes, several different kinds of peppers, okra and lettuce. Here’s our first bit of lettuce that’s almost ready to be eaten:
Matt and the boys worked very hard this week putting a fence around our garden areas to keep out the adorable, but not at all cute, bunny rabbits. I know it’s “just a fence”, but I’m so excited about it that I had to take a picture. There’s nothing I love more than watching my boys work with their daddy (unless it’s eating chocolate while I watch my boys work with their daddy.)
I thought you’d also like to see the volunteer onions I pulled up yesterday. They smell SO good.
In other news, we have a little surprise planned for our boys early this week. I am so excited (even though really, it’s not that extravagant of a plan)!!! The beauty of not frequently taking vacations or not eating out much is that when we do some of these things it is special. I think the boys will be pretty thrilled, especially tonight when we tell them to “pack a backpack and put it by the door to take with you in the morning – and don’t forget your swimming trunks”. ?????!!!
I’ll be filling you in on the surprise too, not to worry. But it just wouldn’t be fair to tell you now since the boys don’t even know yet, would it?!
Here’s our somewhat vague menu plan for the week:
Sunday, June 5
Strawberry orange smoothies, toast
Breakfast for lunch – fundraiser for church youth group
Taco salad, watermelon
Monday, June 6 – Tuesday, June 7
Well, I’m not exactly sure :)
Wednesday, June 8 (Asa’s birthday, which has nothing to do with the surprise, it just coincided with his birthday!)
Homemade donuts
Grilled burgers and homemade fries, watermelon
Cheesy turkey sausage stromboli, fruit salad, birthday cake
Thursday, June 9
Simple soaked pancakes, blueberries
Chef salad with chicken
Salmon, steamed broccoli and carrots, mock frozen yogurt
Friday, June 10
Fried eggs on toast, oranges
Cheddar ranch burgers, potato wedges, peas
Nacho bar
Saturday, June 11
Whole wheat cinnamon rolls, cantaloupe
Leftovers
Grilled steak, baked potatoes, corn, tossed salad
If you have a garden, fill us in on how it’s doing!

I hope the boys LOVE the surprise and Happy Birthday to Asa!
We have our first ever garden this year! Early this spring we put away shallots. We’ve had 3 good pickings of green beans and banana peppers. Still waiting on the bell peppers, tomatoes and squash. I’m loving this garden.

whoa! Where do you live that you have already harvested so much? I am so jealous- I live in northern alaska and up here we have just put everything into the ground- haven’t harvested a thing except some herb leaves…

I have two pots of tomatoes growing. One of them has 14 tomatoes so far and the other one 1 tomato. lol. It’s not doing so well, because I accidently severed it.

We have a box garden that sits about 3 feet off the ground thanks to our military housing. We have far more veggies than actually should be in there. In fact, our peas died due to the crowding. Our tomatoes have over grown the lettuce and strawberries we planted and are growing to be half the garden. let’s just say that we didn’t think they’d ever grow that big! Our broccoli has taken up the other half of the garden. Alas, we move in 2 weeks to a house off post and our garden will be taken apart and will probably die when it is. Next year though, we’ll have a garden four times as large with plenty of space for my veggies!
I’m glad your garden is doing well too! It is so exciting!

Like you we have had a horrable Sprin for starting a garden. Lots of rain = very wet land. I was finally able to get the ground tilled last weekend. Let it sit a couple days to dry out a little. Then my husband barrowed and walk behind tiller and he retilled and we made the mounds and had it all planted within two days. Between the rainy mornings and hot midday sun. Being 35 weeks pregnant I was wondering if I would be capable of planing all of those seeds. Thankfully my husband and kids was awesome and helped me!

We’ve also had a cold & wet spring here is WA! We’re getting our garden in much later than usual this year, but we were able to plant: green beans, zucchini, sugar pumpkins & mini pumpkins, potatoes, and onions. We’ll see what happens with such a late start. . .

Aren’t gardening fences great? We just got our fence up around our been teepee. Unfortunately, about half of the leaves have already been eaten off of our new little plants. I’m hoping they will recover. We also planted lots of herbs this year–lemon balm, lavender, chives, oregano, and more–and hoping to dry or freeze lots of things from those! Isn’t gardening so much fun?!?

I read somewhere you can plant potatoes in a garbage can. Anyone ever do this? Please share

I’ve actually done this before! https://www.heavenlyhomemakers.com/gardening-101-planting-potatoes-in-a-container
It didn’t work out great for us, but it was fun. :)

We accidently spilled popcorn seeds that we buy in bulk from a local amish store. My husband swept them up and threw them out by the fence…a couple weeks later, we had corn growing. I divided them and planted in rows. We have about 30 corn stalks and are getting little corn cobs. It’s really fun to watch, but not really sure what we are doing. Time will tell if it works so that we can have more popcorn…
We also have 2 pineapples, an avocado and lemon tree growing as well (we live in florida)
I should start a blog about unique gardening, especially when my father-in-law couldn’t pass up all the clearanced wilting tomatoes at Lowes, so now we have 30 vibrant tomato plants in our small city backyard as well.
