How much/what kind of your own food/produce do you grow? I’ve started a small garden this year, hoping to help out with grocery expenses. I’ve planted 20 tomato plants (Beefsteak, German Pink, and Cherry), several “hills” of squash and cucumbers, a couple of rows of Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans, and sweet peas (little green peas, like for taters, LOL), carrots, pumpkin pie pumpkins, cabbage, jalapeno peppers, habanero peppers, cayenne peppers, banana peppers, bell peppers, and a “bed” of buttercrunch lettuce. I also planted an herb garden of basil, cilantro, thyme, garlic, rosemary, catnip, oregano, parsley, sage, lavender, and dill. I’m praying that this will help us out with our grocery bill, AND have enough to can/preserve. I also have strawberry plants, and a muscadines vine that’s about 30 years old. It’s HUGE, and produces well. Being from the south (Northeast Georgia), I’m fortunate to have blackberry bushes just about anywhere I go/look, so the kids and I will be picking a lot this year. It’s looking to be one of the biggest blackberry crops I’ve ever seen. Anywho, I was just curious as to what you plant ;)

I’ll try to take some pictures and post about our garden soon – that way I can answer everyone who is curious. :) LOVE fresh garden produce!

That would be awesome!! I love seeing your pictures. I take a lot of pictures too, especially food! My husband says I act like a tourist in my own home, LOL ;)

Was reading your comment on Heavenly Homemakers blog. Noticed you were from GA. We are in GA also. We are about 40 miles north of Atlanta. Have you planted pole beans before? Sounds like you have a big variety in your garden.
Kelley says
Hi Charlotte! This is my first year planting pole beans myself. My daddy has been successful with them for years. I place a “bull pen” panel between the rows for them to climb on. I do the same for my cucumbers and peas too. I’m hoping to preserve as much as possible , while still having fresh as often as I can. I make sauerkraut and chow chow with the cabbage, and my husband loves pickled peppers :) In the fall we plant turnips, and collards.

At least you know something about gardening. Where in GA do you live?
Kelley says
I live about 80 miles Northeast of Atlanta :)

Hi Laura,
Just wanted to give you the suggestion of trying your chocolate whipped cream and strawberries in your crepes. I made a “crepe bar” for supper the other night with chocolate whipped cream, vanilla whipped cream, sliced strawberries, blueberries & bananas. It was so delicious! : ))
Laura says
Oh my goodness, how brilliant are you??? This sounds wonderful!

Thanks for always posting your menus. It helps inspire me when I am in a rut. So many of your recipes have become regulars for our family. Fresh garden produce beats anything else you can buy, doesn’t it?
