Kefir is a wonderful, delicious, and incredibly healthy probiotic drink. It only takes a few minutes of work to prepare. In fact, I made some this morning and was finished within about a minute and a half. In a few hours, we’ll have super healthy kefir to use in smoothies!
There are different ways to make kefir, all of which are easy. If you use “kefir grains”, you will save money in the long run. However, I have found that my busy schedule limits my ability to keep up with my kefir grains. This may be a bit of a cop-out, but this is where I’ve landed at this point.
Instead, I use powdered kefir mix to make jars of kefir. It is still very economical to make kefir this way, and wow is it tasty! I will be sharing a tutorial on how I do this next week. In the meantime, would you like to win a Kefir Starter Culture from Cultures for Health?
I’ve been a customer and affiliate with Cultures for Health for several years, and I completely trust their products and knowledge. Their prices and shipping costs are extremely reasonable. And the buttermilk and kefir I make with their starters are delicious!
Today, Cultures for Health is giving away three Body Ecology Kefir Starter Cultures. To enter this giveaway, you must click here and sign up on the Cultures for Health site. In doing so, not only will you be entered in this giveaway, you’ll also be able to download a free Kefir Recipe eBook!
I am very excited about the thought of many of you making kefir at home to offer your family a wonderful, pro-biotic beverage. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to drink it straight if you don’t want to. Add some fruit to it and make smoothies – your family will think you gave them ice cream.) ;)
We’ll draw three random winners on Monday, June 4. Please watch for a post stating the winners as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen.
And stay tuned for a tutorial on making kefir – it’s much easier than you think!

I have a friend that has an overabundance of kefir she’s trying to get rid of. She has offered to send me some….but I don’t exactly know WHAT it is. Is it like cottage cheese consistency? What does it taste like? What are the different ways to use it? Thanks for any additional information..(she can be a little hard to get a hold of sometimes :)
Laura says
I liken kefir to “drinkable yogurt”. It is very similar in taste, but it is runnier. It is smooth, and works great to give more nourishment to smoothies. That is the main way I use it, but if you get the Cultures for Health free kefir recipe ebook, you can learn many other ways to use it.

I’d love to try this! I’ve been wanting to but not quite sure how to get started. :)

I have been making Kefir from the powdered starter for months now. It is very delicious, but gets spendy. I would love some cultures!!
Jessica says
We were given some grains a while back and I just never could get them to culture right. The kefir tasted really awful (I just know it wasn’t right), but I used it for making pancakes and a few other things. We “let it go” a few weeks ago since it was just stressing me out with the upkeep, and I didn’t even like it! I’m interested in the powdered stuff now — looking forward to your post on that!

Am I the only one having trouble with the E-book download? After finishing, it just shows a blank page.
Jill says
Comes up as a PDF for me. Maybe you are having an Adobe issue? You can try to right click and “save link as” if you are a PC person. Don’t know how to do the equivalent on a mac.

I have been making kefir for years! Here is my recipe ~

I got my starter from a friend and now I share it with everyone. It is thick and creamy just like yogurt. We eat it everyday and it has helped make our gut so healthy. I highly recommend it and if any of you live in the San Diego area, I will be happy to give you some starter!
Kryste Taylor says
Are you still in the kefir “grain business”? I want to start making it but cannot find grains. Where are you in San diego?

Like you, I was doing the kefir grains and just didn’t seems to have the time to keep up with them. I would love to try the powdered kefir.

I was just looking at Cultures site this past weekend. I was interested in the water kefir and buttermilk cultures that they have also. My daughter is sensitive to dairy so I am not sure if kefir will sit well with her or not. I want to try it before the water kefir in case it is okay and then I only have to have one going for our entire family. The buttermilk cultures seems like a great way to always have yummy buttermilk on hand. Hope I can keep up with it though!
Carrie@LifeRegardless says
You can culture canned coconut milk as well. One of the beautiful things about kefir is that it sits much better with lactose intolerant individuals because the molecules are smaller.
Lora Reynolds says
I buy Kefir at the store, but would really like to make it. I made some kefir ice cream for my family last week and they really liked it.
LauraBeth says
I almost ordered some kefir grains last week, but decided to hold off and see if we really like kefir enough to want to make it regularly. I’d really love to try these out!

I have been wanting to try this for some time now, knowing that it is so good for me! I’ve been dealing with some health issues that this would definitely benefit but the expense has also held me back, along with my lack of knowledge. This sounds like a great kit and after looking over the ebook, I really think I could do it. Thanks for offering it. Does it have to be whole fresh milk that you use? It is really hard to find here and if I do, it is really expensive!
Carrie@LifeRegardless says
I use hormone free skim milk, 1%, 2% & whole cow milk as well as fresh goat milk. Kefir’s pretty versatile stuff!
I just posted an article about how to “do” kefir at LifeRegardless.org. May you find it helpful! :-)

I have been making kefir for about 2 years now! I have my own grains already though. I actually bought some from CFH and they never rehydrated. I worked on it for months, but they were just stubborn! I ended up tossing them and buying regular grains elsewhere. I will likely never buy dehydrated grains again, that was a waste of money. Someday I want to try water kefir. After the giveaway, if anyone wants some grains, if they will pay shipping I’m willing to send some! Not dehydrated either. :) Email me loewenother (at) gmail (dot) com and put “kefir grains” in the subject line. I have a huge abundance of grains right now!
Hopefully everyone else has better luck than I had with CFH grains. :)

I LOVE water kefir! Since I started making it about 6 months ago, my family has completely cut out soda and juice because we like the kefir so much (not an easy thing for my soda-loving-husband to do.) My boys love it, especially strawberry-lime or pineapple! They like trying new fruit combinations!

I would love to win this!!

Neat! I’m working my family up to kefir. It was very popular in Russia. They had a wheat and honey flavor that was delicious. They ground up the wheat coarsly so it was a tad chunky. My coordinator’s wife said that yogurt and kefir mixed with fruit and packaged that way was less effective pro-biotic wise (not mixed in a smoothie in your home at the last minute). Anyway, the kefir helped us get past several nasty food poisoning type instances along with charcoal which I thought the Russians were crazy to tell us to drink, but now I ALWAYS have a bottle on hand. :)
