Have you tried making the Liquid Hand Soap recipe I have here on my site? It will save you a lot of money, and it’s very easy to make! Your kids can help. Who wouldn’t love grating a bar of soap? :)
Homemade Non-Toxic Liquid Hand Soap
4 ounce bar of natural soap (I used a bar of coconut oil soap from Tropical Traditions. Any natural bar of soap would work.)
1 gallon of water
Heat the water in a pot, just long enough to steam. Grate the bar of soap with a cheese grater. Take the steaming water off the heat. Immediately pour the grated soap into the water. Stir the mixture, then let it sit for about 15 minutes. Use a hand mixer to blend the soap and water mixture well. Let it sit overnight. The next morning, use the hand mixer again to blend well. Pour mixture into a soap dispenser for use. Save remaining hand soap in a gallon jug.
You can check out the entire picture tutorial here. You’re well on your way to saving lots of money on non-toxic hand soap!

Thank you for posting this! I didn’t know this recipe was here. I feel that cleaning supplies and toiletries are the next place that I need to work on in making our home a less toxic place. I would love any post that you could do on what type of cleaning supplies you use and a list of natural toiletries. I love how you keep things uncomplicated. Thank you!

Well, I did try this, a couple years ago, but I did not have natural soap. It flopped big time. I had doubled the recipe and we had bottle after bottle of liquid soap the consistency of mucus. It made for a lot of laughs. I hope to make it again sometime with the right ingredients.

Does this seperate? I make homemade laundry soap, and I need to shake it each time it is used because of seperation. Wondering if the mixing prevents the seperation? Also, can you add scented oil to this?

I make foaming hand soap (reusing a foaming soap pump) by filling the bottle with water and putting in a squirt of Dr. Bronner’s liquid castille soap. Takes 10 seconds and works great :)

Thanks. I was wondering how to make liquid soap that would work in our foam dispensers. I’ll have to try this.

What do you mean by natural soap?

That’s crazy! I just hit SEND to send an email to my cousin re: using a small amount of liquid hand soap and filling the rest of the bottle with pure water, adding few drops of essential oils (peppermint being my favorite) to save money and have super smelling foaming soap (although not completely chemical free, but SOOO much cheaper and a lot better than full blown store soap) and immediately following I checked my inbox and here was this email! Soap must be on the mind today… =)
