Stopping to pick blueberries on our way to the wedding in Michgan was so much fun that we decided to stop at another U-Pick farm on our way home. This time, we got to ride on a hay wagon to a huge orchard of peach trees!
Asa, the teenager, ate more than he picked. I think he couldn’t help it.
Oh my, he’s still eating.
Now he’s got his brother in on the act. (Malachi may not have wanted me to take this picure, what do you think?)
We couldn’t resist having all the men stick their heads into the fruits/vegetables for a picture. I was laughing so hard I could hardly hold the camera still to take the picture. Something about seeing a corn cob with a goatee gave me the giggles.
That apparently wasn’t funny enough…so we had to throw in silly faces.
Good grief. Now the teenager is eating the watermelon made of wood. Wait Asa! Really, honey. Mama will get you something else to eat.
We came away from this farm with a lovely basket of peaches…most of which are just now becoming ripe enough to eat!! Yes, I can be seen frequently standing at my kitchen sink with peach juice running down my chin.
So, let’s review. We went to a U-Pick Blueberry Farm. Then we went to a U-Pick Peach Farm.
Next up…a U-Pick Chocolate Farm?! :)

Those peaches looked fabulous. I would love to find a place around here that doesn’t spray them into oblivion! Let me know when you find that chocolate farm – I am there!

Um, how did I miss that you were coming to MICHIGAN? Am I allowed to ask were you were now that you’re home? Because we have some awesome blueberry farms around me, I tell ya what. :) Katie

Oh wow…I guess I didn’t realize you lived in MI, or I would have looked you up! I didn’t blog about it before hand because I don’t always like telling everyone that I’m going to be out of town (you know, just in case someone wants to break into my house and steal…my grain mill?).
Anyway, we went to the Detroit area for a wedding. The Peach farm was in Coloma (I think) and the blueberry farm was just over the Indiana border.
Tell me you don’t live like five minutes away from those places. It would have been SO fun to meet you in person!
Katie @ Kitchen Stewardship says
You’re in luck, I’m on the opposite side of the state in Grand Rapids.
Meeting would be SUCH. FUN. Do you ever go to blog conferences? I have my sights set on Blissdom in January. Bet your boys would survive (although just barely) without you!
We picked 11.5 pounds of blueberries (just me and the kids) and ended up buying 25 more pounds, since I realized that the gas money wasn’t worth the savings. Need to get hubby to come with us next summer!

oooooooh, i would love a U-pick chocolate farm!!! :)

Oh! U-pick chocolate would be amazing…. but probably very, very dangerous! Ok, maybe if it was just dark chocolate I could say I was protecting my heart??? Maybe??

My Grandaddy was a peach farmer… I understand why Asa couldn’t stop eating them. They are nothing like what is sold in the stores. ;)

Love it! You have inspired me to go pick peaches and blueberries with my kiddos this week :) Michigan blueberries are AWESOME!

Nothing better than a good peach!!!
I have a concern over making the vanilla extract you posted the other day. I have been searching online for the vanilla beans and they are very expensive. I don’t know how much the vodka would cost. I went on vanilla. com and can buy the vanilla cheaper than making it I think. I just don’t understand the difference in all the different kinds. I could use some expertise!!!!
Thanks!
Charlotte

I usually pay about $50 for vanilla beans and $30 for vodka…the amount I get makes 1 1/2 gallons of vanilla, which breaks down to $3.33 for an 8 ounce bottle of real, pure vanilla…the best I’ve ever tasted! I buy inexpensive vodka ($10 for a half gallon). In addition, you can use HALF the amount of this homemade vanilla in recipes because it is very strong! So, that saves even more!

Oh my, you really got me laughing with the picture of Asa eating the wooden watermelon! My girls eat me out of house and home now, and they are only 5 and 6, I can’t imagine what it will be like in a few years. The girls went berry picking with their dad yesterday, while I had to work (ugh!) and they got raspberries and blackberries. Yum!!!!

I live in Michigan also. I am about 55 miles north of Detroit in Port Huron. The peaches here are awesome, but I used to live in the UP and the blueberry picking up there was awesome. Hope you had a great family vacation, it sure looked like fun.
Thanks for posting your adventures.
