Just in time for Valentine’s Day – here’s a fun giveaway from CK Bakery Shop!  It is no secret that I love jars (like a crazy woman).  Throw some cake in that jar, send it to me in the mail, and hand me a fork - well you’ve just made me a very happy person.

Kim began making cakes in jars when her husband was deployed overseas.  She found that this was a great way to send a treat to her husband – a treat that would stay fresh for a very long time.  We received some of her cakes last year to review and loved them.  When she sent us more last week, my kids were overjoyed to have more to try.  I thought my 14 year old was going to devour all three pint sized jars in one sitting.  (Thankfully, he has more self control than that.)  However, between bites, he kept going on and on about how good and moist and flavorful they were.  In fact, I almost handed the computer to him right then and there so that he could write this review.  He couldn’t decide which cake flavor he liked better, couldn’t get over how moist they were, couldn’t get enough….  :)

You’ll be happy to know that I was able to sneak a small bite of each cake before my boys finished them off.  Red Velvet, Almond Coconut Chocolate, Pineapple Upside Down Cake – all three were great.  And check out all the other flavors CK Bakery offers.

I encourage you all to check out Wholesome Comfort – it’s a wonderful resource full of healthy, comforting recipes!

This eBook absolutely deserves its name.  Before I’d even tried any of the recipes, I found this book comforting.  Yes, this ebook shouts comfort simply by reading through it.  :)  I could live off the recipes in this eBook, and I’m pretty sure my family wouldn’t complain either.

It seems that Katie and I think alike.  She appreciates real, whole food ingredients just like I do.  All of these recipes are simple and basic, just like I prefer.  Baked Macaroni and Cheese, Crock Pot Chicken and Rice, Italian Sausage, Twice Baked Potatoes, Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge….  See, I told you it was comforting just to read.  And now to try more of those recipes!

Most of the recipes Katie includes are grain free, which is wonderful for those of you with allergies, or for all of us who want to venture out of our whole wheat comfort zone a little bit and try alternative flours.  I love the look of her tried and true recipe for Almond Flour Dinner Rolls.  The eBook also includes many egg, dairy, and peanut free recipes.

I think Katie has outdone herself with this eBook and I encourage you to check it out.  You’ll love all the comforting recipes you’ll find to feed your family!

We all love to bake during holiday season.  Or, if we don’t love to bake, we all love to eat.  Right?  ;)

One of my very favorite sources of healthy, organic food online is Tropical Traditions.  (Free shipping today if you didn’t see that already!)  They offer the finest choices of many organic foods, and always have a great sale going on.  In addition, I really appreciate Tropical Traditions because they have been wonderful to work with here at Heavenly Homemakers.  They frequently offer great giveaways here, giving all of you a chance to win some of their wonderful products.

This time, Tropical Traditions is offering a fun Holiday Baking Package, which includes:

I absolutely love using their palm shortening for pie crusts.  (Here is my whole wheat pie crust recipe.)  And I believe we all know that I have a great fondness for coconut flour.  Of course, their shredded coconut is wonderful for a variety of recipes.  But their brown rice syrup is a new addition to my kitchen.  I appreciated that they sent me some to “play with”.

I decided to use it to make Chocolate Crispy Balls, very similar to these Healthier Rice Crispy Treats.  Here’s how I did it.  (Super simple, by the way!)

Chocolate Crispy Balls

1 cup peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)
1/3 cup brown rice syrup
1/3 cup chocolate chips
3 cups Crispy Rice Cereal

In a medium saucepan, stir peanut butter, brown rice syrup and chocolate chips over medium heat until chocolate is melted.  Mix in rice cereal, then shape into balls.  Eat as is, or chill before serving.

I haven’t done lots of research to know very much about the nutritional value of brown rice syrup, but for now, I’ll go with the fact that I trust Tropical Traditions.  Plus, we’ll all be careful not to overindulge on Chocolate Crispy Balls.  (hopefully)  :)
