Question #5

June 7, 2008

Asa’s birthday is Sunday…which means he earns the privilege of choosing every single meal for the day.  It’s our family birthday tradition.

Now…because he’s extra, extra careful about each decision he makes…and because he really, really wants to make sure he’s making the right decision…and these kinds of birthday meal decisions only come around once a year…and he doesn’t want to blow it and have regrets (can you say firstborn?)…he still hasn’t completely made up his mind and told me his birthday menu yet.  (Yes, he still has a few hours to deliberate and make sure he’s going to choose all of the right things.)

My question for you today is…

What’s your absolute favorite meal absolutely of all time?

(And you know, if I could…I’d make it for you.)  (On your birthday.)  :)

I can’t wait to hear what your favorite meals are!

Good morning, Laura (and others)! My favorite meal that someone else made for me is from a now-defunct restaurant called Stackwood’s in Lincoln. A huge slice of meatloaf with a sort of sweetish BBQish tomato sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, mixed veggies, and bread. Mmmm. The best part? It was SUCH HUGE portions, that there was plenty for lunch tomorrow.

My favorite meal that I make . . . hmm, I don’t know! Spaghetti? Ooh! I make a fabulous cheese fondue! (And a fabulous chocolate fondue to go with it of course)

The baby took six steps the day before yesterday, one of her top front teeth popped through yesterday, and I think the other top tooth is coming in today! Very exciting around here!

You mean I have to pick JUST ONE??

Growing up, we always got to pick our favorite meal on our birthday (just one meal, though!), and I always picked my mom’s home made meatloaf, baked potatoes, green beans or corn, bread, and chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert. YUM!! My tummy is growling!

My second choice was oven barbequed chicken (with mom’s homemade sauce), baked potatoes, corn, bread, chocolate cake and ice cream.

See, only one dish had to change! =)

    Hi Laura,
My favorite meal is beef & bean enchiladas with guacamole & sour cream, with Spanish rice on the side…yum!

I don’t know how to pick just ONE favorite meal. I’m totally a first born like Asa, and I’d need a month to decide (and then I’d be second guessing myself all the while I ate).

Based on our menu and what I eat the most often, I’d say nachos (with beans and meat and cheese and olives, and a small dallop of sour cream) is my favorite meal.

But, I like Sally’s choices too, except sometimes I’d prefer my potatoes mashed, instead of baked.

Oh my word, I’m so HUNGRY now!

HMM Just one meal? I’m the first born like Asa & Char. But I guess if I had to pick it would be…a juicy steak with geen beans cooked with bacon and onion, some corn bread. MMM now I’m hungry! Choose wisely Asa and Happy Birthday!

  6. List Mama says:

I’ve found that the older I get, the more I refuse to commit to ANYTHING as my favorite! If I would have to choose, I would say some sort of grilled salmon with a lovely plate of green veggies and mashed potatoes.

This is hard… I’m an “oldest,” too, and I love to cook. Well, let’s do this. My favorite meal that I DON’T cook is Alice Springs Chicken at Outback Steakhouse. We manage to go there about once a year and that’s what I ALWAYS order. Chicken breast smothered with bacon, sauteed mushrooms, green onions, and lots of cheese. Served with a yummy honey mustard sauce. Oh my… I know it’s been about a year. Maybe a road trip is in order?!?

I get a craving for Fresh Blueberry Pancakes every once in a while. My dad and uncle used to compete at Grandma’s house… with fresh blueberries I got to help pick! How do you tell your dad that uncle’s cakes are better? I never did. I just said they were both great, which they were.

I like the Chocolate Dream thing at Carrabba’s. It is a brownie sundae dessert.

Lunch would probably be… man! Just about anything I didn’t have to cook. I am a first child too, and my mother’s daughter. I love food of all kinds, I don’t really have a favorite anymore.

  9. Kari says:

Hamburgers (grilled by my dad), fresh tomatoes from the garden (on the burgers and in this yummy dressing my mom makes), sweet corn (picked from the garden moments before eating), watermelon (must spit seeds in yard), lemon cake (made by my grandma). Hmm, I see a family theme here. Also, I’m very hungry and I wish it were my birthday!

  10. Edi says:

Well start with a REALLY good Greek Salad w/lots of feta cheese…then a yummy hamburger and some shoestring style French Fries…crispy on the outside - well cooked on the inside.

Angel food cake with Betty Crocker French Vanilla Frosting and vanilla ice-cream.

And Coke to drink! How’s that?

Or I might have to have some sort of Turtle cheesecake instead of the above…

  11. Heather - Doodle Acres says:

A really good steak with sauteed onions and mushrooms - french fries w/ blue cheese dressing for dipping - Dessert would be my homemade chocolate chip cookies (frozen)…

    Yum!!!

  12. Beulah says:

    What a fun question! :)

I love a Peruvian dish called Anticuchos. It’s my absolute favorite dish, although there are quite a few runner-ups.

    What’s yours?!
